Job Description

The Dental Director is responsible for administering, maintaining and expanding a program of dental care in the Lower Elwha Dental Clinic setting. This position supervises dental staff of the dental clinic, represents the dental provider team and dental staff to the Health and Executive Directors. The Dental Director provides dental advice and counsel to the Health Services Director and the Tribal CEO and Council.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a dental school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the ADA.
  • Three (3) years experience post-residency as a general dentist, including at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Active dental license in the state of Washington, or eligible for license.
  • Active DEA registration.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a dental clinic setting.
  • Knowledge of dental public health and community dentistry.
  • An enthusiastic approach to pediatric dentistry and current training in minimally invasive practices.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges.
  • Ability to maintain and respect strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain a friendly and courteous manner in all patient and staff encounters.
  • Must past Background Check and UA testing prior to employment.
  • Ability to follow department and Tribal policies and procedures.

OTHER DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with Native American communities.
  • Experience working in a rural or underserved community.
  • Experience working in dental public health.
  • Working knowledge of Indian Health Service organization and administrative processes.
  • Experience with dental clinic administration, management, and budget development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clinical Leadership:
    1. Provide direct patient care, including examinations, diagnoses, education, and treatment planning.
    2. Refer patients to specialists for consultation or treatment according to established clinical protocols and guidelines.
    3. Document all patient-dentist interactions in the patient's dental record in a timely manner, ensuring the record accurately reflects the nature of the visit, the patient's condition, and the care or treatment provided.
    4. Serve as spokesperson of the dental provider team.
    5. Supervise the work of dental hygienists, assistants, and other dental staff.
    6. Ensure compliance with all relevant dental regulations and standards.
  • Administrative Duties:
    1. Prepare and submit written reports as needed on Dental Department issues, concerns, program status, initiatives, and progress to the Health Services Director.
    2. Develop and implement clinic policies and procedures in compliance with current accepted professional standards.
    3. Assist in preparation and manage the Dental Department’s budget and resources.
    4. Oversee the procurement of dental supplies and equipment.
    5. Attend meetings as necessary to represent the Dental Department.
    6. Participate in the preparation of grant applications for the Dental Department.
    7. Assume primary responsibility for developing and implementing the Tribe's dental health care plan.
    8. Provide consultation to the Health Services Director, CEO, and Tribal Council regarding dental and oral health issues.
    9. Participate in short and long term program planning for the Dental Department including development of goals and objectives.
    10. Coordinate with IHS and community partners on outreach and education programs.
  • Staff Management:
    1. Recruit, hire, and train dental staff.
    2. Assist in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and orientation of dental clinic staff and providers.
    3. Evaluate staff performance and provide mentorship.
    4. Address staff concerns and resolve conflicts.
  • Quality Improvement:
    1. Monitor and evaluate the quality of dental care provided.
    2. Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Community Engagement:
    1. Ensure Dental Department participation in community outreach activities to promote oral health awareness.
    2. Collaborate with tribal leaders and community organizations to address dental health needs.
  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines pertaining to dental practice, clinical care, personnel matters, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
  • Perform other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of modem dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs.
  • Understanding of current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on dental care.
  • Ability to creatively work with other health care professionals from a variety of disciplines to achieve maximal productivity and quality of care.
  • Continuously promote the growth and development of fellow professionals, exercising appropriate supervisory control and displaying good work judgment.
  • Ability to follow department and Tribal policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop, reaching with arms.
  • Must be physically able to perform dental procedures.
  • Able to lift 30+ pounds.
  • Must be able to move at a fast pace.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment (e.g. changes to the daily schedule, added tasks, etc.).
  • Self-motivated and able to recognize and complete tasks without direct supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Must abide by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe personnel policies and procedures and the Drug and Alcohol policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in dental office environment

  • 40 hour work week
