The Waste Operations Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the waste management division. This includes strategic planning, managing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing the collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of waste, as well as implementing sustainable practices to optimize waste management processes. The Waste Operations Director will ensure operational efficiency while maintaining a focus on environmental safety and sustainability.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the daily waste management operations, including waste collection, recycling, waste-to-energy, landfill operations, and hazardous waste handling.
  • Develop and implement operational strategies that improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure proper management of waste streams including municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial waste, and specialized hazardous waste disposal.
  • Monitor and manage logistics, including route optimization, equipment utilization, and labor deployment to maximize operational productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local waste management regulations (such as EPA, OSHA, and DOT standards).
  • Establish and maintain safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
  • Oversee the environmental compliance of operations, ensuring the implementation of sustainable practices that align with company and regulatory goals.
  • Develop and manage the department's budget, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring cost-effective operations without compromising quality or compliance.
  • Work closely with the finance team to monitor waste management-related revenues and expenses, and identify areas for cost-saving initiatives.
  • Implement cost control measures while ensuring that service levels meet company standards and customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and implement innovative waste reduction, recycling, and reuse initiatives to enhance sustainability efforts.
  • Serve as a liaison between the company and local governments, regulatory bodies, and the community to address waste management issues and enhance relationships.
  • Oversee the integration of technology and processes that reduce the environmental impact of operations, such as waste-to-energy programs, landfill gas management, and composting efforts.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and pursue opportunities for energy recovery and beneficial reuse of waste materials.

Required Eligibility Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience managing waste operations, environmental services, or a related industry, with 5+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
    • Strong experience in operations management, logistics, and staff supervision.
  • Certifications:
    • Certifications in waste management, such as Certified Solid Waste Manager (CSWM), or Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), are preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • This position may require working in both an office and field environment, with regular visits to waste management sites such as landfills, recycling centers, and waste processing facilities.
  • Occasional travel may be required to meet with external partners or attend industry conferences.
  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or carry loads of up to 50 lbs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is elevated at times.
  • Employees may be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week and other than normal business hours, such as holidays, evenings, and weekends as business demands.

Hours of Work

  • Typical week will consist of Monday – Friday, 8-10 hours per day.

Travel

  • Some travel may be required to visit client sites, company locations, conferences, and meetings.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of operations managers, supervisors, drivers, and other field staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Ensure appropriate training and development programs for employees to stay compliant with safety standards and operational best practices.
  • Conduct performance reviews, foster a culture of safety and teamwork, and address performance or compliance issues in a timely manner.
