General Summary of Position

Job Summary:
MedStar Health is looking for a Unit Secretary to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the Cardiac Intermediate 3NW unit. This position is part-time and will be 20 hours per week. The shifts range between 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM, 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM Monday through Friday with rotating weekends.

As a Unit Secretary, you will provide administrative and clerical support on a patient-centered care unit or department. You will facilitate communication and contribute to patient care by greeting healthcare personnel, expediting patient care processes, and serving as a central contact for telephone calls and paperwork distribution.

Primary Duties:

  • Greets patients, visitors, and/or physicians and provides appropriate assistance. Answers incoming telephone calls to the unit, relaying information as appropriate. Responds to patient call system requests and other alarms as needed.
  • Facilitates and prepares for MedConnect Downtime. Faxes orders to pharmacy and other appropriate areas.
  • Enters/updates unit charges into the computer as applicable, such as laboratory tests and dietary orders.
  • Knows basic equipment troubleshooting procedures and reports repair needs.
  • Initiates and completes clerical functions regarding the admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
  • Files hard copies such as face sheets and paper orders in the appropriate patient medical chart.
  • Assists in maintaining unit supplies/equipment by monitoring inventory levels and ordering supplies.
  • Uses different electronic systems appropriate for a unit secretary.
  • Cross-covers for other nursing units and gives report to on-coming Unit Secretary or nursing associates at completion of assigned shift.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and efficient work station.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new unit secretaries.
  • Maintains daily census/nursing assignment boards and updates assignment boards for various healthcare personnel.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • May require up to 1 year of technical or specialized training such as the unit secretary training program.
  • 6 to 12 months hospital or clerical experience demonstrating familiarity with typing/computer keyboarding and medical terminology.
  • Requires the ability to read and write; knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
  • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, and drawings.

This position has a hiring range of $18.88 - $28.39.
