The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) was formed in 1969 to save the historic Ohio Theatre (Columbus) from the wrecking ball. CAPA has adopted Columbus’ Palace Theatre and Southern Theatre, and manages the Riffe Center Theatres, the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, CT, and the Lincoln Theatre.

One unique aspect of CAPA is its shared service business model, offering personalized back-office services to local arts organizations. Some of these services include marketing, ticketing, management, operations, finance, publicity, human resources, IT, and development.

Since its inception in 1969, CAPA has achieved international recognition for the diversity of the performing arts and entertainment programming it presents, and excellence in facility management.

Primary Function

The Production Manager oversees stage and event operations at all CAPA owned and managed facilities in Central Ohio. They coordinate CAPA presentations and events in other facilities in Central Ohio. The Production Manager supervises theatre stage managers and stage personnel working in these facilities. This is a salaried, exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedules full-time stage personnel at all CAPA owned and managed venues.
  • Oversees the inventory control system for stage and production supplies and equipment.
  • Manages the maintenance and replacement schedule for stage equipment, including a yearly budget.
  • Works with product vendors to negotiate purchases/rentals of production and stage equipment.
  • Oversees the execution of the collective bargaining agreement between CAPA and IATSE.
  • Serves as a liaison with union representatives regarding labor personnel or contract issues.
  • Ensures stage employees follow CAPA safety guidelines.
  • Works with CAPA Human Resources to hire “as needed” stage personnel.
  • Ensures coverage of full-time stage personnel in the event of a vacation, sickness, or emergency.
  • Supervises full-time Technical Directors, Head Carpenters, and EADHs, including training and performance management.
  • Manages as-needed union and non-union employees.
  • Works with rental clients to ensure their events are successful.
  • Advises on Production/Technical needs for CAPA’s special events.
  • Serves as a technical manager for CAPA produced events.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced knowledge of live performance technology, including lighting, sound, video, and rigging systems.
  • Strong leadership and labor relations skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements: moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds, walking up to 4 hours per day, and sitting for extended periods.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Credentials and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 6+ years’ experience in live performance productions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
