The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) was formed in 1969 to save the historic Ohio Theatre (Columbus) from the wrecking ball. After the theatre was saved, CAPA renovated the magnificent 1928 movie palace to its original glory. Since then, CAPA has adopted Columbus’ Palace Theatre and Southern Theatre, and manages the Riffe Center Theatres, the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, CT, and the Lincoln Theatre.

One unique aspect of CAPA is its shared service business model, offering personalized back-office services to local arts organizations. These services include marketing, ticketing, management, operations, finance, publicity, human resources, IT, and development.

Primary Function

The Production Manager oversees stage and event operations at all CAPA owned and managed facilities in Central Ohio, including the Ohio, Palace, Southern, Lincoln, and Riffe Center Theatres. They coordinate CAPA presentations and events in other facilities in Central Ohio. The Production Manager supervises theatre stage managers and stage personnel, reporting to the Vice President of Theatre Operations. This is a salaried, exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Schedules full-time stage personnel at all CAPA owned and managed venues.
2. Oversees the inventory control system for stage and production supplies and equipment.
3. Manages the maintenance and replacement schedule for stage equipment.
4. Works with product vendors to negotiate purchases/rentals of production and stage equipment.
5. Oversees the execution of the collective bargaining agreement between CAPA and IATSE.
6. Serves as a liaison with union representatives regarding labor personnel or contract issues.
7. Ensures stage employees follow CAPA safety guidelines.
8. Works with CAPA Human Resources to hire “as needed” stage personnel.
9. Ensures coverage of full-time stage personnel in the event of a vacation, sickness, or emergency.
10. Supervises full-time Technical Directors, Head Carpenters, and Employer Assigned Department Heads (EADHs).
11. Manages as-needed union and non-union employees.
12. Works with rental clients to ensure their events are successful.
13. Advises on Production/Technical needs for CAPA’s special events.
14. Serves as a technical manager for CAPA produced events.
15. Assists other CAPA departments with special projects as needed.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
2. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
3. Advanced knowledge of live performance technology, including lighting, sound, video, and rigging systems.
4. Strong leadership and labor relations skills.
5. Strong problem-solving skills.
6. Ability to meet physical requirements, with or without accommodation.
7. A valid driver's license is required.

Credentials and Experience

1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
2. 6+ years’ experience in live performance productions.
3. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
