General Description:
The Custodial Lead is a working Lead also responsible for the day-to-day assignments of a large team of Custodians, ensuring that efficient and effective service standards are delivered within the College at all times. The Custodial Site will play a key role in ensuring that the buildings and the College environment are maintained to the highest possible standards and best practices to create a safe, secure, clean, and aesthetically pleasant physical environment.
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Maintenance and Facilities, the Custodial Site assists in the planning, scheduling, and work completion of the facilities department in a most cost-efficient manner.
Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leads, schedules, and coordinates day-to-day priorities, and assigns custodial staff activity.
- Assumes subordinate assignments as necessary.
- Performs regular physical inspections of buildings and grounds.
- Coordinates snow and ice removal and reports on progress.
- Identifies staff opportunities and keeps the Associate Director informed.
- Prepares requests for purchases of materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Maintains records of equipment and supplies to ensure compliance with labeling and the requirements of the Right to Know Act.
- Coordinates the set up for various College and/or Community events and functions.
- Oversees maintenance of college equipment.
- Maintains a liaison with various vendors to ensure timely response times in emergency situations.
- On call to handle problems, vandalism, special events, and other after-hours calls to maintain campus operation programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director.
Education Requirements:
- Associates Degree required or high school degree with equivalent combination of appropriate custodial, property management experience or proven supervisory and leadership experience.
- Requires certification in Rutgers University’s Educational Facilities Management, IFMA Facilities Management, or obtain certification within three years.
Experience:
- Five (5) years’ experience in physical plant or building facilities operations.
- Two (2) years’ supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of cleaning systems, and safety standards.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English. Ability to read, write and speak Spanish is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
- Works inside and outside and may be exposed to extreme temperatures.
- Exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors, and possible skin irritations from cleaning chemicals and solutions.
- Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may occasionally lift up to 40-50 pounds.
- Care is required when working from ladders or lifting heavy equipment to prevent injury.
- May move heavy equipment. Possibly sets up and works from ladders.
