The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
  2. Updating patient information and collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.
  3. Properly explaining in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
  4. Demonstrating techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  5. Fully understanding all of the physicians' orders.
  6. Matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  7. Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
  8. Checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  9. Packaging specimens for transport and storing specimen samples according to required temperature.
  10. Placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling, and following procedures outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
  11. Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  12. Attending annual department trainings.
  13. Answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  2. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. High School diploma or equivalent or Phlebotomy Certification.
