The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities:
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
- Updating patient information and collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explaining in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrating techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understanding all of the physicians' orders.
- Matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
- Checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Packaging specimens for transport and storing specimen samples according to required temperature.
- Placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling, and following procedures outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
- Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attending annual department trainings.
- Answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School diploma or equivalent or Phlebotomy Certification.
