Responsibilities
In keeping with the Marian Regional Medical Center healthcare philosophy, the Certified Phlebotomist - Outpatient is responsible for greeting and accurately registering patients into the hospital/laboratory information systems. The incumbent is responsible for accurately obtaining, processing, and handling blood, urine, and culture specimens. Additionally, the incumbent accurately collects, processes, and ships specialized kit testing. Work is primarily in the outpatient area of the hospital or at a standalone patient service center (draw station). The incumbent is required to rotate among the laboratory outreach patient service centers, including shift, holiday, and weekend rotation. Patients served may range in age from newborn to geriatric, and work will be performed in accordance with established procedures of Marian Regional Medical Center Laboratory, CLSI standards, and State and Federal Regulations. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management following written notice.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- 2 years experience as either a CPT or as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory or a full-service outreach laboratory setting.
- Must complete required continuing education requirements to maintain State CPT I and CPR certifications.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification within the first 60 days of employment (CT CPRBLS).
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (CT PHLEBOT).
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting with a focus on outpatient services, including greeting and registering patients, collecting, processing, and handling a breadth of patients' samples, including miscellaneous reference tests, specialized kits, and samples requiring immediate specific handling conditions.
- Experience should include accurate technical skills and exceptional customer service while working independently with little or no supervision.
- Competence should be demonstrated with specimen collection technique using a variety of age/condition specific collection devices, proper handling and processing of samples, and an understanding of registration protocols including obtaining ABNs and collecting payment when required.
Preferred Requirements:
- 3 years experience as either a CPT or a Lab Assistant in a full-service outreach laboratory setting.
- 1 year venipuncture experience.
- High school and/or college chemistry, biology, or mathematics.
Special Skills:
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions exactly, demonstrate and promote teamwork, and work in a calm and conscientious manner under high volume and STAT conditions.
- Ability to work well with or without direct constant supervision with rigid accuracy.
- Knowledge of CLSI standards. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the human venous system and anatomy and all venipuncture techniques.
- Ability to draw high numbers of patients in an efficient, professional manner and increase productivity under high volume and STAT conditions.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills and exercise sound judgment when working independently, as well as understand when and where to access resources when the course of action is not clear.
Pay Range
$30.45 - $36.41 /hour
