Children's Mercy Hospital (MO), Kansas City, MO, United States

Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Physician

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) is seeking a new faculty member to join the BMT/cellular therapy program. Applicants must possess a medical degree and Board eligibility or certification in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of research productivity in and commitment to basic/translational immunotherapy focused research.  Candidates should also possess experience in clinical care of pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant and immune effector cell therapy experience.

The primary responsibility of this position is to build and/or maintain a successful research program conducting high impact immunotherapy/transplant focused research.  The candidate will provide consultation and education in cancer research to the hospital faculty, fellows and staff; engage in independent scholarly activity; and support and facilitate competitive research at the hospital.  Support will be provided to ensure the candidates successful pursuit of this goal.  Clinical responsibilities will be within the Section of Bone Marrow Transplant in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT. Protected time and support for translational investigation will be provided by the Department of Pediatrics and the Childrens Mercy Research Institute.  The academic appointment will be at the assistant, associate or full professor level commensurate upon a candidates qualifications. A successful candidate for this position will join us as we strive to create a workplace that reflects the community we serve, as well as our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, team and integrity.

Children's Mercy Kanas City has a full-service BMT program with a full complement of staffing including three other faculty physicians, six advanced practice providers, and in-house, overnight coverage by Heme-Onc trained physicians. The program is a FACT-accredited, and National Marrow Donor Program and Childrens Oncology Group designated transplant center.  We perform 35-40 transplants annually for a variety of malignant and non-malignant diseases while utilizing all donor sources including haploidentical donors and banked cord blood. The program is focused on novel, less toxic transplant approaches to treat patients with non-malignant diseases, such as severe combined immunodeficiency, aplastic anemia, hemoglobinopathies and rare genetic disorders. The BMT program has conducted investigator-initiated CAR T-cell trials and participated in industry and cooperative group cell therapy trials.  Our institution was one of the first to join the pivotal trial leading to FDA approval of Kymriah and has a faculty member on that study steering committee.  The program has a budding laboratory footprint in the area of cellular therapy for cancer, as well.

Research endeavors will receive support from the Childrens Mercy Research Institute (CMRI).  Abundant laboratory space is available as well as a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility should it be needed for translation of research to a clinical trial.  The CMRI is an integrated research environment designed to eliminate boundaries between science and medicine.  The CMRI provides a collaborative environment for physicians, scientists, academic colleagues, philanthropic partners and the larger community.

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT sees more than 200 newly diagnosed children with cancer every year and is a consortium partner in the NCI-designated University of Kansas Cancer Center. It runs a busy hematology service with over 300 sickle cell disease patients, coagulation service and a hemophilia treatment center. There is an active Pediatric Hematology-Oncology fellowship program.

The successful applicant must share our unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, collegiality, antiracism, and respect for inclusion of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
