NPS UNIT: SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS NRA
LOCATION: LOS ANGELES, CA
The HBCUI Interns will assist the Santa Monica Mountains NRA/National Park Service (SAMO) staff in supporting the collaborative efforts of our Interpretation team through both in-person and virtual experiences. The intern will be based in the Los Angeles office of the park and will focus on connecting African American communities in Los Angeles to their local public lands and the local National Park site. During the internship, the intern(s) will actively engage with communities and build relationships with organizations for future interpretive collaborations/projects.
The Intern will work with park staff and a combination of communities, recreation centers, public libraries, and summer school programs. Interactions will support collaborative development, design, and piloting of interpretive programs throughout the duration of the program.
Responsibilities include:
Assist in the development of in-person/virtual programs by brainstorming ideas with families, community organizations, and teachers. Assist with program logistics such as developing and preparing program materials, cleaning/repairing equipment, videotaping programs, developing social media posts, flyer promotion, photographing training sessions, preparing paperwork, and reviewing program materials. Communicate via phone, e-mail, and in-person with participating parties. Generate a list of materials and supplies with accompanying purchase requests for in-person meetings/training sessions. Assist with material drop-off/pick-up at participating project partners. Learn how to facilitate Zoom meetings with park staff and work with students to solicit their ideas as educational products are developed. Produce quarterly reports on completed assignments and hours worked. Assist with any internship-related close-out report.
Through the summer season, the intern will be exposed to the inner workings of an interpretive division at a National Park site. Our hope is to spark curiosity and intrigue for the individual to begin building their foundation for their own park steward journey. The intern will be exposed to the entirety of the park’s Interpretation branch, which includes general public interaction, volunteer operations, special events, and curriculum-based programming.
The goal of our project is to focus on outdoor equity, providing tools and resources to communities in Los Angeles that may be under-resourced or not aware of their local public lands. The intern(s) will work on understanding the needs/interests of our African American constituents and create interpretive experiences that reflect this information. The intern(s) will be able to report on aspects of social justice, outdoor equity, inclusive programming, and accessibility through these interactions. The deliverable for this internship is to create an educational resource to be placed on the park’s education webpage, participate in public summer programming in the park, recruit volunteers, and lead at least two field trips for the public to a site in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Learning Goals The selected individual(s) will gain experience with interpretation through different lenses. Intern(s) will learn about the various public land sites found in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and neighboring public lands in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Through structured training and coaching by park staff, they will learn about the park resources and history, outdoor education practices, and techniques. Engagement will occur through both virtual and in-person meetings. The intern will also work with park staff on developing, designing, marketing, and presenting interpretive programs during their time at the park site. #J-18808-Ljbffr
