Public Works Facilities Maintenance


JOB SUMMARY


The purpose of this classification is to perform routine, manual work cleaning and maintaining city buildings and facilities.

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

MAJOR DUTIES


  1. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, buffs, waxes, and vacuums floor surfaces; schedules floor work to ensure least possible disruption of work routines in buildings and offices.
  2. Daily cleans/disinfects bathroom toilets, urinals, sinks, counters, floors, walls, stalls, fills toilet paper, paper towels and soap dispensers and empties trash cans.
  3. Clean and wash windows, walls, windowsills and screens as directed.
  4. Dusts and cleans common areas of city facilities.
  5. Daily cleans the lobby area of City Hall including the front entrance.
  6. Daily collects recycle for offices.
  7. Responsible for proper use of all equipment furnished to perform duties.
  8. Responsible and accountable for inventory of cleaning supplies and paper products including toilet paper.
  9. Performs emergency clean-up duties.
  10. May perform a variety of minor repairs to toilets, doors, locking devices, equipment.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  1. Knowledge of procedures and equipment to be used in each cleaning operation.
  2. Knowledge of locations and layouts of City buildings.
  3. Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures and departmental rules and regulations.
  4. Knowledge of the proper use of various cleaning chemicals.
  5. Skill in understanding and following instructions.
  6. Skill in operating cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, large trash cans, high-speed buffer, stripper machine.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES


Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, ADA standards, and building codes. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of a variety of cleaning and minor maintenance and repair duties. The location of the work contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform routine, manual work cleaning and maintaining city buildings and facilities. Success in this position results in well-maintained and safe facilities.

  • Contacts are typically with maintenance tech, supervisors, department heads, and operators.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • Work is performed with employee typically standing, walking, stooping, reaching and bending. Employee must lift both light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity, and are able to distinguish between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • More than two years of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of a valid state drivers license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
