Job Summary

The custodial position was created for the upkeep, grooming, and cleanliness of the university facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to work within the overall organization of Facilities Management.
2. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and express ideas effectively and concisely.
3. Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills.
4. Must adhere to all safety standards and work practices set by Facilities Management.
5. Should be well organized and able to work independently without close supervision.
6. Should be vitally interested in custodial care.

Essential Job Functions

1. Sweep, mop, and scrub floors, stairs (inside and outside buildings), and other surfaces.
2. Scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubber and buffers.
3. Vacuum rugs in offices and public areas. Shampoo rugs periodically using heavy vacuum cleaner and rug shampooing machine.
4. Clean and dust furniture, exhibit cases, pictures, door trim, and chalkboards.
5. Replace liners in wastebaskets and trash containers.
6. Wash window sills, glass in corridor doors.
7. Wash glass and trim in entrance doors.
8. Wash and/or clean interior wall spaces by hand or with powered wall washing machine, working on ladders and scaffolding, as required.
9. Clean and service lavatories, toilet rooms, and rest rooms.
10. Report items that need repairs (doors, faucets, windows, etc.).
11. Collect and place in containers or plastic bags trash and debris, place trash in collection area for removal by sanitation trucks.

Qualifications

High School diploma and one to two years’ experience in custodial care of a similar facility. Will also accept any combination of education, training, or experience which fulfills the requirements of the position and needs of Alcorn State University.

Licensing and Certifications

Must possess and maintain a Mississippi Driver’s License.
