The Assistant Professor of American History position is responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the mission and strategic goals of the Department of History & Related Fields by teaching in the field of United States history connecting knowledge with the discipline of political science. The Assistant Professor will also teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate classes in U.S. history, as well as support the department and university by teaching the introductory “Historical Perspectives on Culture, Belief, and Civilization” course and may teach other courses as qualified. This is an onsite, in-person teaching position that is promotable and eligible for extended contract. University of Northwestern – St. Paul, a private, comprehensive, Christian university committed to providing Christ-centered education, is located on a 100-acre suburban campus just north of the Twin Cities.

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach a combination of introductory and upper-level courses in the history of the United States, general education history courses (specifically, “Historical Perspectives on Culture, Belief, and Civilization”), service courses supporting the majors and minors of the department, and courses in subfields such as political science, economics, and geography as qualified.
  • Advise History majors as well as students in the Politics, History, and Economics (PHE) major, help to coordinate and promote the PHE major, hold engaging office hours, attend department and faculty meetings, fulfill assigned departmental duties, and other functions as requested by the department and academic leadership.
  • Because our community is a significant part of our mission and the development of our students, all employees act as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively partnering with the University to disciple students in growing intellectually and spiritually, and with Northwestern Media to lead people to Christ and nurture believers to mature in their faith.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with department duties as requested.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D., required with area of specialization in United States history strongly preferred. Ph.D. in a related field will be considered. ABD applicants with a completion date will be considered. Ideal candidates will have a subfield in American political history.
  • Secondary specialization in politics or modern world history, preferred.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level, preferred.
  • Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising of undergraduates.
  • Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction.
  • Ability to teach a variety of course levels with various concentrations.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule.
  • Basic to intermediate computer skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment.
