POSITION SUMMARY: The Occupational Therapist shall be a trained health care professional that uses purposeful, goal directed activities and task analysis to enable children with a disability to benefit from their Individualized Education Programs (IEP's). Occupational Therapists, in the school setting, look at certain skills issues which may interfere with a child's educational performance such as hand function, oral motor function, visual motor and perceptual skills, sensory awareness/processing, gross motor skills, self-care and pre-vocational tasks. These areas can be addressed through a variety of intervention strategies, which may include direct therapy with the child, consultation with the teacher, modification of the environment, provision of adaptive equipment, and staff training. The Occupational Therapist is charged with providing research-based interventions to assure students are receiving the most up to date and proven techniques in their field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure team understanding of student occupational performance strengths and needs, through evaluation, educational program planning, and service delivery. Evaluate the student's ability and formulate the student's occupational profile through a variety of functional, behavioral, and standardized assessments, skilled observation, checklists, histories, and interviews. Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehensive written report, which reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the educational environment, directs program development, and guides evidence-based intervention. Develop occupationally based intervention plans based on student needs and evaluation results. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines, offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans (IEPs) and intervention plans to achieve IEP goals. Provide targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and occupational performance within the school environment. Consult with the school-based team to achieve student outcomes. Adapt and modify the environment, including assistive technology and training instructional staff to meet individual needs and help students function as independently as possible. Educate students, educational personnel, and families to facilitate skills in areas of occupation, health maintenance, and safety. Monitor and reassess the effects of occupational therapy intervention and determine whether to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention. Document occupational therapy services to ensure accountability and meet standards for reimbursement as appropriate. Teach, monitor, and collaborate with educational personnel, community agencies, parents, and students to increase understanding of the student's occupational performance. Provide continuing education and in-services for educational personnel, parents, and community-based service providers. Participate in continuing education for professional development to ensure practice is consistent with best practices and to meet Colorado Licensure requirements. Use professional literature, evidence-based research, and continuing education content to make practice decisions. Use the professional Code of Ethics and standards of practice to guide ethical decision-making in practice. Notify the Principal and Director of Student Services of any failure to implement the requirements of assigned students' IEPs. Maintain student records and Medicaid documentation. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision of non-occupational support personnel involves conducting supervisory duties in accordance with the organization's policies and relevant laws. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, participating in interviews, providing training and development opportunities, assigning and directing work, offering performance feedback, and addressing complaints to resolve issues.

BUDGET AND/OR RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Prioritize and schedule work tasks independently. Manage and maintain inventory of therapeutic equipment and assessments. Project needs for budget planning. Maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and school system policy. Review occupational therapy services for improvements and make changes as needed to ensure quality of services.
