A day in the life of this role:
The Lead Certified Medical Assistant functions under the supervision of the Health Center's Director and the clinical supervision of the Medical Director. The Lead CMA assists providers by performing a variety of patient flow, supply and environmental duties to support the health care team in the delivery of high-quality patient care. The Lead CMA provides day-to-day supervision of CMAs to ensure best practice bare, adequate support and promote overall CMA job satisfaction.
Summary of duties: Provide day-to-day supervision of CMAs to ensure best practice care, adequate support and promote CMA job satisfaction. Collaborate with Charge Registered Nurse in managing staffing levels to support patient care needs by ensuring that CMA staff schedules are developed, communicated, and fulfilled Ensure ordering of medical equipment, supplies and medications, to ensure adequate supply for clinical care; maintain required documentation and aim to minimize waste Serve as a mentor and resource to staff (existing and new Provide oversight of medical assistant students Coordinate and ensure new CMAs receive appropriate training and site orientation with oversight by the Charge Registered Nurse Coordinate CLIA, OSHA and other CMA training as needed Conduct annual competency evaluation of CMA staff, including but not limited to CLIA waived training Monitor and maintain effective workflows; make recommendations to improve overall workflows to improve patient experience Responsible for training CMA's on new medical equipment Schedule and leads regular CMA staff meetings Provide input to Site Director on performance evaluations for CMA staff for both formal annual reviews and informal coachings Participate in committees, attend meetings, and work to achieve committee goals Assist with data collection, reporting, and adherence to quality standards Review patient's electronic medical record (EMR) prior to scheduled appointment to ensure that all that lab results, consult reports and hospital discharge records are available to the provider and note dates of most recent primary care screening tests Properly identify patient using OCHS's established identification process and escort to examination room Review and records patient's reason for visit, current medications, and update history as noted in adult health history form/interim history form; conduct through patient interview Provide patient with forms to be completed prior to provider visit (learning needs assessment, depression screen, consent forms as necessary etc.). Accurately perform and record patient's vital signs, height, weight and oxygen saturation Assist in preparing patient for examination, including undressing, dressing, and getting on and off the examination table, as needed Conduct hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; records results in EMR; reports abnormal findings to provider Perform CLIA waived point of care testing Label, collect and prepare lab specimens, handling all specimens using Universal Precautions and delivering as indicated Notify provider of patient's arrival and readiness for their examination Assist providers with patient examination and procedures, including (but not limited to) minor surgical procedures, GYN exams, diagnostic studies, and treatments. Operate and monitor functioning of equipment and hand instruments to the provider Recognize and report to provider abnormal vital signs; recognizes potential emergency situations, seek assistance and intervenes appropriately Notify the appropriate person in the event of a medical emergency; assists provider in rendering emergency care as directed Prepare and administer vaccines as directed by the patients provider Apply and remove dressings under the direction of the provide Participates in quality assurance activities and all training seminars (OSHA and others) Interact and communicate professionally with co-workers Maintain patient confidentiality at all times Maintain pleasant, respectful and courteous demeanor at all times with patients and coworkers Clean, wrap and sterilize instruments according to policy and procedure for reprocessing of instrument Assist Charge Nurse with inventory and ordering all medical supplies Keep exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly in accord with infection control and HIPP A standards; monitors rooms for patient safety; documents inspection of rooms twice daily Maintain patient confidentiality at all times Maintain a pleasant, respectful and courteous demeanor at all times with patients and coworkers Exercise care in the operation and use of equipment and perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning Maintain work area in a clean, safe and organized manner Qualifications
What we need from you:
Graduation from high school, or the equivalent Successful completion/certification as a CMA (or become certified within 6 months of employment) Successful completion/certification in BLS (or become certified within 6 months of employment) Phlebotomy training required before medical assistant may draw blood. BLS certification preferred. Prior supervision, management experience preferred Prior experience in Clinical Primary Care setting
