The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall strategic leadership, operational management, and financial health of the Big Red Barn Retreat. This role ensures the organization operates efficiently, maintains compliance with all regulatory requirements, and fosters a high-performance culture that supports the mission of healing, wellness, and post-traumatic growth for veterans, active duty service members, and first responders. The ED serves as the primary driver of organizational strategy in partnership with the Board of Directors and oversees all aspects of financial management, fundraising, donor development, legislative affairs, community partnerships, and marketing & communications. Additionally, the ED provides oversight of operations and property management while leading the team to achieve maximum impact.
Salary Range:
$85,000 - $100,000
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Job responsibilities and duties may be subject to change as needed)
Strategic Leadership & Board Support Partner with the Board of Directors to develop and execute BRBR’s strategic plan.
Align strategic objectives with operational execution to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
Provide regular updates on performance metrics, financial health, and mission-driven impact.
Recommend and implement policies to enhance organizational sustainability and growth.
Work closely with the Board on governance, strategic initiatives, and external relationships.
Team Leadership & Organizational Culture Supervise and support direct reports, staff, and volunteers to enhance organizational performance.
Foster open communication, provide feedback, and implement performance evaluation standards.
Champion a positive organizational culture that reflects BRBR’s mission and values.
Promote and oversee key HR initiatives, including recruitment, training, and professional development.
Ensure an inclusive, collaborative, and mission-driven workplace environment.
Financial Oversight & Fundraising Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability.
Oversee revenue generation efforts, including grants, donor relations, sponsorships, and fundraising campaigns.
Cultivate relationships with donors, corporate partners, and philanthropic organizations.
Collaborate with the Board’s finance committee to maintain compliance with financial policies and regulatory requirements.
Operations & Property Management Oversee daily operations to ensure efficiency, safety, and mission-driven effectiveness.
Oversee property and facility operations, ensuring maintenance and security.
Implement policies and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness.
Community Partnerships & Legislative Affairs Cultivate and strengthen relationships with community leaders, government officials, nonprofits, and key stakeholders.
Advocate for policy initiatives that align with the organization's mission and objectives.
Represent the Big Red Barn Retreat in public forums, legislative hearings, and community events.
Build strategic alliances to expand the organization's reach and impact.
Marketing & Communications Oversight Establish BRBR as the premier nonprofit in the Carolinas serving the military and first responder communities.
Develop and oversee communication strategies for donors, partners, and the public.
Ensure branding, messaging, and outreach efforts effectively promote BRBR’s mission and programs.
Serve as a key spokesperson and media representative for BRBR.
Compliance & Risk Management Ensures adherence to legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
Maintains transparency in financial reporting and governance.
Implements policies to mitigate risks and ensure the safety and security of staff, volunteers, and program participants.
Other Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proven experience in executive leadership roles within the nonprofit, healthcare, veteran services, or related sectors.
Track record of successful fundraising, donor development, and financial stewardship.
Experience in team leadership, HR oversight, and organizational development.
Strong background in public relations, community engagement, and legislative affairs.
Familiarity with property management, program development, and nonprofit compliance.

Travel Requirements:
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee generally works indoors. While the facility is climate controlled, the employee works in an office setting with natural noise disruptions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasionally, based on circumstances, the job may need to be performed in a remote work environment.
