The Physician Assistant, Hospitalist Services works within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive care to acutely ill general medicine inpatients and emergency department observation patients. Also responsible for taking admission history and physicals, placing orders, reviewing lab/test results, formulating treatment plans and discharge summaries, etc.

GENERAL DUTIES

Obtains patient history and performs assessment. Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic procedures. Performs daily clinical assessments with accurate implementation and documentation of care plan, as evidenced in chart.

Provides and documents direct treatment and management of health conditions.

Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options and community resources.

Performs preventative health assessments, screening, immunizations and care.

Ensures adequate preparation for patient by reviewing pertinent medical data, x-rays and lab values, as evidenced by physician feedback.

Actively participates in the assessment, treatment and discharge planning.

Coordinates and maintains communication with family members, nursing staff, consulting physicians and attending physicians.

Provides accurate record-keeping as evidenced by complete and pertinent history and physicals, progress notes and discharge summaries.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

2 years of related experience.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program required.

Basic Life Support Health Care Provider American Heart Association

Pediatric Advanced Life Support American Heart Association

Advanced Cardiac Life Support American Heart Association

Physician Assistants Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of advanced procedures specific to the role such as chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracotomy, percutaneous central line placement, peripheral artery puncture and cannulation, removal of thoracotomy tube, suprapubic bladder aspiration.

Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.

Effective verbal and written communication skills, ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
