The Open Innovation team in the Intellectual Property Group in Microsoft’s Corporate, External & Legal Affairs (CELA) division has a rare and immediate opening for a Senior Copyright Counsel attorney to help counsel and shape Microsoft’s products and services, as well as its strategy and engagement on a wide variety of cutting-edge IP policy issues, with a focus on IP-related issues related to data, artificial intelligence, and online platforms, both in the United States and throughout the world.

Responsibilities

Counseling Microsoft’s diverse business groups on IP and related issues such as copyright, trade secret, CFAA, CDA, platform safe harbor and responsibilities, and others that impact its products and services, and creating scalable and practical solutions to help Microsoft achieve its business and legal objectives.Developing and leveraging expertise and knowledge on artificial intelligence and data-related IP issues to provide internal and external guidance on issues of strategic importance to Microsoft, based on a thorough understanding on the competitive, policy and legal landscape in the software, Internet and technology industries.Working closely with CELA colleagues in government affairs, litigation, business counseling, worldwide sales and other groups to inform and lead effective engagement on IP Policy issues of strategic importance to the company, including amicus briefs in leading cases, pending legislation, regulatory proceedings, industry coalitions and special projects.Engaging with relevant communities and influential voices on intellectual property, artificial intelligence and data-related issues in a productive manner that improves the IP systems to the benefit of Microsoft and its customers, the technology industry, and the public.The mix and balance among these responsibilities is anticipated to shift over time.Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International DegreeOR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.7+ years experience as a practicing attorney with experience in intellectual property law relevant to online platforms, technology, data and AI such as copyright, trade secret, intermediary liability, and CFAA issues impacting products and online services, developing IP policy and strategy, and reviewing legislation and strategic litigation.OR equivalent practice of law.Preferred Qualifications

In-house experience is a plus.Experience advocating before external audiences in data, AI, copyright or intellectual property areas relevant to Microsoft and the technology industry.Legal Counsel IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,400 - $242,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $176,000 - $264,000 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
