The Vermont Attorney General's Office has an immediate opening for a full-time Solicitor General.
Description
The responsibilities of this position include briefing and arguing significant appeals on behalf of the State of Vermont in cases before the Vermont Supreme Court, the Second Circuit, and potentially the U.S. Supreme Court; supervising all the Office's appellate litigation; assisting the Office's other divisions with complex trial litigation; and managing the Office's Appellate Unit. The position is also responsible for providing advice on the constitutionality of proposed legislation and other state actions, reviewing requests to join multi-state litigation and amicus curiae briefs in the federal appellate courts including the U.S. Supreme Court, conducting appellate advocacy trainings for the office, and performing other projects as requested by the Attorney General. The position is located at the Attorney General's Office at 109 State Street in Montpelier, Vermont.
Compensation
This is an exempt, full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar or be eligible to obtain admission by waiver. At least 7 years of prior litigation experience is required. The candidate should have excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; a strong interest in and familiarity with constitutional law; and a willingness to work on a wide variety of subject matters.
Prior Appellate Experience, Including Clerkship Experience, Is Strongly Preferred.
