JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the President/Chief Executive Officer, the Procurement Surgeon supports the mission, vison, and strategic plan of Texas Organ Sharing Alliance by serving as the primary procurement surgeon for abdominal organs for transplantation and research in donor hospitals throughout the service area.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The Procurement Surgeon position is a full-time exempt position. This position requires 24/7/365 availability based on the recovery needs of the Clinical department.

KEY FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:Performs surgical organ recovery, both Donation after Brain Death (DBD) donors and Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) donors, ensuring nationals standards and TOSA policies and procedures are met.Serves as a key ambassador for TOSA and donation by modeling and controlling the intraoperative behavior of all recovery team membersAssumes on-call surgical recovery responsibilities assuring adequate coverage and timely recovery of organs.Follows TOSAs protocols when assisting in the medical management of a donor in the operating room, as appropriate.Provides and documents an accurate and verifiable description of organ anatomy to include assessment of quality, anatomical abnormalities, and surgical damage.Provides education to both internal staff and donation partners.Maintains knowledge level of current practices of organ procurement.Participates in verification of organ labeling and packaging to ensure accuracy and in accordance with UNOS policies.Serves as a liaison to the transplant centers providing surgical feedback as appropriate.Participates actively in the quality and performance improvement process both within TOSA and in conjunction with local transplant programs.Develops and recommends research policies and initiatives.Collaborates with the President/CEO and Senior leadership team to develop and achieve performance and strategic goals /objectives of TOSAAttends donations focused educational conferences as agreed upon from the CEO.Attends TOSAs Advisory Board meetings.Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:Current Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine licensed in the state of Texas, preferred board certified in general surgery.Must have three years of experience as a surgeon performing organ procurement or organ transplant.Strong communications, organizational and interpersonal skills.Ability to identify opportunities for improvement in departmental and/or job-related processes and procedures.Must be able to work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.Must be able to travel as needed for these positions.
