JOB SUMMARY:

The Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC) is responsible for evaluating potential organ donor referrals, maximizing medical management, allocating donated organs, and coordinating all aspects of the organ recovery process. The ORC must possess a variety of medical and social skills in addition to the ability to work independently and make critical decisions in a highly stressful environment.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time exempt position which shares 24 hour on-call and second call responsibilities on a rotating basis with other coordinators. Assignments may require up to 24 plus hours of continuous service during periods of increased activity.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Accepts "on-call" responsibilities and responds to all donor referrals by telephone and initial and daily on-site evaluations according to Recovery Services Policies and Procedures with inter-regional travel as required.Coordinates all aspects of authorization, donor management or organ allocation and organ recovery:Follows established guidelines in obtaining/documenting organ/tissue consentContacts Medical Examiner, Justice of the Peace, and/or appropriate legal authority to obtain clearance to proceed with the recoveryObtains, documents and communicates accurate past and current medical/social historyFollows established guidelines in the medical management or screening/testing of organ donorsCoordinates organ allocation according to established organizational policies and UNOS guidelines if primary role is organ allocation.Coordinates donor management with donor hospital staff, consulting physicians, TOSA staff and transplant centers if primary role is donor management.Communicates all pertinent information to organ placement staff and transplant centers.Consults/updates the Administrator on-call regarding clinical and technical aspects of consent, organ donor evaluation, management and organ allocation.Completes/updates all data entry in a timely manner to include but not limited to TOSA's Donor Information and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) records.Follows up and reports on all cultures as required.Compliance with TOSA's Safety, Quality and Multicultural Organizational Plans.Participates in education and training programs for hospitals, transplant programs and the public.Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of TOSA staff, Hospital staff, and transplant center staff.Acts as liaison to Tissue/Eye agencies regarding donation.Assists in transporting and maintaining all equipment and supplies pre and post donor case.Performs other duties as required.Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum of 1-2 years of experience and related training in an ICU, NICU, CCU SICU, NeuroICU or TraumaICU environment preferred.Must be a graduate on an accredited school of nursing or have equivalent experience and training in an allied healthcare related field.Demonstrate teamwork, clinical, analytical, organizational, and communication skills in a high stress environment.Obtain BLS certification.Obtain ACLS certification within 12 months if primary role is donor management.Working knowledge of standard office equipment (computer/fax/copier)Valid driver's license and proof of automobile insurance.Possesses a reliable personal automobile.Physical requirement includes the ability to lift at least 50 lbs.Travel by company or personal automobile or commercial/charter aircraft required.Maintains confidentiality regarding all patient and other confidential information.
