Job SummaryThis Genetic Counselor will be responsible for:Providing genetic counseling to individuals and families in the Maternal Fetal Care Center, including those at risk for specific hereditary disorders. Interpreting family history, clinical and genetic findings to predict risk to patient. Obtaining and reviewing medical, developmental, and family history information as part of diagnostic team. Ascertaining needs and agendas of patients/families.Responding to inquiries related to diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, genetic testing, and pregnancy exposures. Participating in the communication process and educating families. Providing documentation of evaluation for families and referring physicians.Overseeing and coordinating daily operations of assigned research study(s). Acting as liaison between principal investigator, study staff, and project collaborators. Contributing to the development of research protocols and/or consent forms as required for review by the Institutional Review Board. Assisting in preparing applications for research funding.Responding to inquiries related to research eligibility and procedures, diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, and genetic testing within scope of research project.Identifying, contacting, and screening potential participants/families for eligibility of participation in research studies. Obtaining informed consent for study participation from eligible individuals/families.Collecting and interpreting family/medical history, clinical and genetic findings for research studies.Monitoring and reviewing data/sample collection, computer entry, and related activities to ensure compliance and consistency of application.Developing and participating in genetics education programs for physicians, other health professionals, and lay populations. Training, supervising, and evaluating graduate-level counseling students.Collaborating in developing written documents and web-based materials for a variety of purposes including journal publications and conference presentations.To qualify, you must have:Current Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.Current Massachusetts license as a Genetic Counselor.A Master's Degree is required.Good communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions.Good analytical and problem-solving skills in order to collect information/samples from a wide variety of sources.The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of clinical, scientific, or technical principles, theories, and concepts and in-depth, cross-functional experience-based knowledge.Well-developed writing skills.Boston Children’s Hospital offers competitive compensation and unmatched benefits including flexible schedules, affordable health, vision and dental insurance, child care and student loan subsidies, generous levels of time off, 403(b) Retirement Savings plan, Pension, Tuition and certain License and Certification Reimbursement, cell phone plan discounts and discounted rates on T-passes.
