The Department of Neurology, UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) is seeking a full-time faculty neurologist to serve as the Chief of the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine. The Chief will be responsible for advancing the Division’s clinical, educational, and research missions with goals of optimizing patient access and faculty productivity; improving the patient experience; increasing extramural research funding; and supporting the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. Rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.The Chief will foster and recruit faculty and trainees, strengthen collaborative departmental and hospital partner relationships, enhance outreach activities and engage local and regional community physicians. S/he also will develop local clinical protocols, clinical pathways and outcomes measures to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care. The Chief will be expected to lead the Division to the next level in clinical care, research and training.About the DivisionThe Division of Neuromuscular Medicine currently consists of two providers who are board-certified in Neuromuscular Medicine. The division has an EMG and autonomic testing lab. The division directs an MDA Care Center which serves over 700 patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders and collaborates closely with physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiology, pulmonology and orthopedic surgery to provide multidisciplinary care. The division also has an ALS clinic certified by the National ALS Association which provides a “one stop shop” including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, dietician, social work, neuropsychology and respiratory therapy. This clinic serves over 200 ALS patients in the South Texas region. The division is also collaborating with the Biggs Institute to develop a frontotemporal dementia center of excellence given the high incidence of this disorder in our ALS population. The division recently received ACGME-accreditation to begin a 1-year fellowship in July 2022.The Division of Neuromuscular Medicine offers a robust research program including many Clinical trials and innovative research for patients with ALS, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies, and peripheral neuropathy. Division faculty are active members of the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) and the Muscle Study Group (MSG). The division is currently part of the Healey Platform study in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and NEALS, and also members of the CReATe Consortium which is a NIH funded project through the University of Miami for patients with motor neuron disorders. The division currently has 5 active trials in Myasthenia Gravis and 1 trial for CIDP.The candidate will supervise a vibrant team of academic neurologists who are providing innovative and individualized inpatient and outpatient clinical care, educating the next generation of neurologists, and conducting cutting-edge research within a collegial atmosphere. The candidate will also participate in the care of neuromuscular patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings and the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows.RequirementsMinimum requirements are an MD/DO degree and completion of ACGME-accredited neurology residency training and fellowship training in neuromuscular medicine or clinical neurophysiology. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in Texas and be board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology in Neurology and Neuromuscular Medicine.
