Applications Engineer 2 is a mid-level engineering role focused on laser material processing experiments conducted at nLIGHT’s applications labs as well as at external customer and partner facilities.

This role requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar engineering function, ideally in an industrial environment.

Applications Engineer 2 will be responsible for designing, executing, documenting, analyzing, and presenting detailed application experiments to internal and external customers including executive management.

This role requires excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills to build productive internal and external working relationships.

Expected growth areas for this role are advancing expertise in an applications subspecialty, individual ownership of applications support for specific customers, involvement in new business development for key customers, and publishing/presenting on laser applications at technical conferences and trade shows.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Set up, operate, and program robotic and CNC systems to execute laser processing experiments for customer applications in laser cutting, welding, and similar metal manufacturing processes.

Develop, manage, execute, and document experiments to optimize laser applications parameters with support from senior applications staff.

Independently conduct applications development work towards project objectives driven by customer requirements.

Use inspection tools, metrology equipment, and metallographic examination techniques to evaluate part quality produced by the processing parameters.

Quantitatively and qualitatively assess process performance against customer-provided productivity metrics and quality criteria.

Summarize results and findings into a presentation format that enables nLIGHT customers to gain expertise from parameter development experiments.

Present results and findings to groups of customers or applications partners including audiences of novices, technical experts, or executive management.

Maintain the automated machinery and lab equipment in clean working order.

Build productive working relationships with external applications partners and internal nLIGHT colleagues.

Support new and existing customers and applications partners with applications expertise by phone/email or onsite at the customer facility

Up to 25% travel (domestic and international) to technical conferences, new business development meetings, or onsite customer process support and troubleshooting.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum BS Engineering degree or equivalent

Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar engineering role.

Experience developing and managing detailed test plans from general instructions.

Effectively communicates technical results to internal and external audiences.

Demonstrated experience managing project schedules and deliverables.

Experience working with automated equipment (CNC, robotics, PLCs, etc.)

Effectively contributes to and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.

Excellent interpersonal skills for customer communication and technical presentations.

Strong mechanical aptitude; experienced with hand tools, power tools, precision devices, and metrology equipment.

Enthusiasm for manufacturing processes; industrial manufacturing experience a plus.
