(“Civils”). The position will report to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Buildings and Civils, as well as the General Counsel of Balfour Beatty plc, the United Kingdom-based parent company of the U.S. businesses.
This hybrid role offers a mix of remote work and in-person teamwork. The candidate should live near a Balfour Beatty U.S. office and be open to frequent travel, including at least 50% for U.S. projects and leadership meetings.
Additionally, this position will serve as a key liaison with compliance leaders in our sister business in the US and at Balfour Beatty plc. As such, the role will be tasked with both developing and implementing a high-quality compliance program for two successful US businesses, and also aligning it with national and global programs.
Essential Functions
Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a high-quality ethics and compliance program, building on the work that has already been done by the prior compliance officer.
Setting and reinforcing tone at the top, Balfour Beatty’s culture and values, and a strong “speak up” culture.
Leveraging existing enterprise risk assessments, internal audit reviews and quality reviews to carry out (as required) an assessment of Balfour Beatty’s compliance and reputational risks from across the business. Conducting additional monitoring of procedures, practices, and operations to identify and mitigate compliance risk.
Development and implementation of an integrated compliance training and communication plan.
Periodic review and enhancement of compliance policies and procedures, and supervision of the daily administration of compliance-related approvals and activities.
Evaluation of data (e.g. speak up data, audit findings, compliance exception reports) to help inform improvements to the compliance program, conducting “lessons learned” analyses from incidents of non-compliance, and creating and managing effective action plans to remediate compliance control gaps or other issues identified through compliance monitoring and analysis.
Proven experience of leading internal investigations in a sensitive commercial environment, while offering proposals and recommendations in a non-judgmental manner.
Knowledge of, and relevant experience within, the regulatory environment specific to commercial and infrastructure related construction.
This is a role that requires the ability to influence and command respect within the organization and with peers. The individual will therefore have at least eight (8) years of experience working at an appropriately senior level, in an analytical and/or investigative role within a corporate compliance, finance, legal or other investigative function, and possess the following attributes:
Ability to work closely with senior leaders, providing a sounding board and challenge.
Ability to promote and manage significant change, demonstrating a track record of managing change through the organization.
Acting as a credible partner with external stakeholders.
Self-starter, highly motivated, energetic and dedicated, with a strong track record of promotion in the organizations that they have worked in.
Experience in managing others, and building and leading high performing teams, with a willingness to embrace and drive best practice.
Passionate about their work and adaptable. They will have strong communication skills and an ability to command respect at all levels of the organization.
They must be independent and objective, but commercially astute.
Good communicator with strong inter-personal skills.
Ability to analyze complex data with accuracy.
Strong IT skills and knowledge of MS Office, Excel, Word etc.
Sound analytical and problem-solving skills along with the ability to make timely and balanced decisions, despite uncertainties and pressures, which consider the wider strategic picture and implications for the organization.
Preferred Experience
A law degree from an ABA accredited law school, and status as a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional is preferred, but not required.
