Job Objective:
A brief overview of the position.Works directly under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in giving emergency care to patients. Performs selected technical procedures and tasks and assists physicians and nurses in direct patient care. Takes and records clinical measures, collect specimens, provide transportation, maintain equipment and supplies as well as participate in a safe patient care environment. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct, and supports the ED mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process, and maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventative maintenance.

Licensure/CertificationRequired: California State Certified Phlebotomy Technician, American Heart Association BLS
ExperiencePreferred: 1 year experience as CPT
Essential ResponsibilitiesDemonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violationsPerforms direct patient care including:12 lead EKGs. Observes and interprets rhythms for abnormalities. Communicate all rhythm changes and dysrhythmias to RN or Emergency Department provider.Obtains vital signs and documents in the EMRPerforms BLS skills; Set up of oxygen (O2); suctions oral/pharyngeal airwaysPerforms visual acuity exams and documents in the EMRApplies splints, immobilizers, C-collars, and other orthopedic devices and documents in the EMRPerforms noninvasive wound careObserves behavioral health patients and assists with ADLS
Performs venipuncture:In accordance with phlebotomy, identification, labeling procedures, according to EMC policy and procedure to ensure patient safetyCollects specimens be venipuncture, heel stick or finger stick by established protocolsWashes hands before and after patient collection, and disposes of sharps devices according to policyCollects specimens and utilizes resources available to assistTransports patient specimens to laboratory when applicableObserves all isolation precautions and regulations when collecting specimens from isolation patientsPerforms point of care glucose monitoring as directed by RN
Desk Duties include:Responsible for ongoing review of patient's rhythm, rate and interpretation. Monitors alarms and communicates with RN or provider if there are any changes to telemetry readings. Activates "Code Blue" appropriatelyAnswers telephone and responds to questions or directs calls to appropriate individualPages appropriate on-call providers or facilities for admissions, consults and/or transfersMaintains the ED Call panel daily and verifies specialties at the beginning of each shiftPrepares charts for transfer per the "Admission, Transfer, and Discharge from the Emergency Department" policyResponsible for tracking department cell phone devices (mobile heartbeat); monitors and maintains daily shift sign out & returns to mitigate property loss
Responsible for transporting patients to the appropriate care areas, both within and outside of the Emergency Department while maintaining patient safety by correctly identifying patient and locationAdheres to guidelines for change of shift report and internal transfer of patient carePrepares patient for physical examination or testing such as x-raySets up/assists with suturing, sterile procedures, and critical care procedures. Responsible for ensuring that all sterile instruments are handled according to the "Contaminated Instrument Transport Process"Ensures that equipment is cleaned and operationalRestocks supplies and coordinates ordering unit supplies with assigned personnelMaintains communication between physicians, nursing and other departments that are a part of the health care delivery teamPerform other duties as assigned
