The Senior Engineer will be responsible for web application design and development, performance, availability, and reliability. This person will be responsible to provide consultation and strategic recommendations by quickly assessing and remediating complex platform availability issues. This is an opportunity to work in one of the best technology units to help improve customer experience for American Express digital assets and influence how millions of people interact with their cards, their merchants, and their money.The Senior Kotlin and Python SRE Engineer will play a pivotal role in embedding reliability and operational excellence into our software development lifecycle. You will lead efforts in Non-Abstract Large System Design (NALSD), Failure Mode Analysis (FMO), Chaos Engineering, enhancing our observability framework using OpenTelemetry (OTEL), implementing resiliency patterns, and mentoring junior resources. Software development and System DesignFunction as member of an agile team by contributing to software builds through consistent development practices (tools, common components, and documentation)Demonstrate increased self-reliance to achieve team goals.Participate in code reviews and automated testing.Debug basic software components and identify code defects for remediation.Enable the deployment, support, and monitoring of software across test, integration, and production environments.Automate deployments in test or production environments.Automatically scale applications based on demand projections.Shift-Left Engineering: Promote and implement shift-left practices, embedding reliability considerations early in the software development process to prevent issues before they arise.SLOs and Error Budgets: Define, implement, and manage Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets, providing a quantitative measure of system reliability and driving continuous improvement.Non-Abstract Large System Design (NALSD): Lead the design and implementation of scalable, resilient system architectures that support our global operations.Failure Mode Analysis (FMO): Conduct comprehensive failure mode analyses to identify potential system vulnerabilities and develop mitigation strategies to enhance system reliability and resilience.Observability using OTEL: Implement and refine our observability framework using OpenTelemetry to ensure comprehensive visibility into system health and performance.Implementing Resiliency Patterns: Employ and mentor the team in resiliency patterns such as circuit breakers, bulkheads, retries, and timeouts to build fault-tolerant and highly available systemsChaos Engineering: Design and execute chaos engineering experiments to proactively discover and rectify potential system weaknesses, thereby improving our system's resilience to unexpected disruptions.Runbook Automation using Python: Develop and maintain automated runbooks using Python to streamline incident response and operational procedures, reducing mean time to recovery (MTTR) and enhancing team efficiency.Mentorship: Act as a mentor to junior engineers, providing guidance and support in their professional development and in understanding and implementing SRE principles and practices.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree8+ years of software development experience.5+ years’ experience working with Java/J2EE, Kotlin, Python, application design and development in an Enterprise setting.Preferred Qualifications
Masters DegreeExpertise in objected oriented analysis and design across a variety of platforms.Experience in design and developing mission critical highly available enterprise applications and Java/J2EE applications performance tuning.Hands on experience on some or all of the following programming Languages and Frameworks preferred: Kotlin, Python Java/J2EE, React, JSON, CouchBase, Cassandra, Redis, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Elastic Stack, Kafka, Git, RDBMS like Postgres SQL, Springboot, Vertex, multi-threaded programming, Maven, Gradle, Junit.Thorough understanding of XML, SOAP, JSON, web services technologies, and data structure fundamentals, with experience in multi-threaded programming.RESTful API development experienceExperience with continuous integration/deployment (Jenkins, Maven, XLR, Mockito, SOAPUI, JMeter).Expertise with HTML, CSS, AJAX, JavaScript Frameworks React and NodeJSExpertise in objected oriented analysis and design across a variety of platforms.Practical experience on implementation various system integration solutions, such as, APIs and Data integration layers (Batch & Real-Time);Extensive experience in designing and implementing large scale platforms with high resiliency, availability, and reliability.Strong experience in applications with high throughput and performanceExperience with micro services architectures and service mesh technologies is preferred.Ability to effectively communicate to internal and external business partners on architecture and solution design.Research latest technology, concepts, conceptualize solution and develop proof of concept that will improve resiliency and performance of the applications.Design and implement innovative solution/framework that will improve software engineering velocity, infrastructure resiliency and security, and data availability.Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work well in a diverse team-focused environment.Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefitsThe above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition.
