As the financial steward at Per Scholas, the Controller champions our mission to bridge the tech education divide for individuals often excluded. Within this pivotal role, reporting to the CFO, you'll ensure timely and compliant recordkeeping, balanced budgets, and clean audits across payables, receivables, government contracts, procurement, and payroll. Maintain strong relationships with Auditors, Financial Institutions, and other key stakeholders. Proactively collaborate with internal operational teams to ensure the collection of government contracts, philanthropy contributions, and social venture revenue streams driving our continued success and directly contributing to our goal of creating equitable pathways into tech careers. Your leadership ensures our resources are optimized to make a lasting impact, advancing a tech workforce as diverse as the community we serve.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership:
Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to
address strategic and operational financial issues , providing insights and recommendations based on thorough financial analyses and budget forecasts.
Actively participate in strategic planning sessions as a key member of the leadership team, ensuring financial strategies support Per Scholas’ mission and objectives.
Lead
in
budgetary planning
and
cost management
efforts, ensuring they are in harmony with the organization's strategic direction.
Work alongside the revenue teams to ensure
financial strategies
are
integrated with fundraising
and other
revenue generation efforts , optimizing resource allocation and financial health.
Liaise
with the
finance committee of the board , discussing financial trends, operational changes, and strategies to enhance organizational effectiveness.
Financial Management and Operations:
Lead audit*
activities, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and standards.
Direct
the
budgeting process
and manage budget
implementation , monitoring financial progress and presenting key metrics to stakeholders.
Maintain
robust financial records
in accordance with
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) , ensuring all funds are managed responsibly.
Prepare and oversee all financial reports for stakeholders and the board of directors,
ensuring transparency and accountability
in Per Scholas’ financial operations.
Manage cash flow
and
financial forecasting , overseeing all accounting activities related to projects and departments.
Team Development and Leadership:
Manage
and
mentor
the fiscal team,
promoting
a culture of excellence and ethical practice.
Foster inter-departmental collaboration , ensuring financial strategies and practices support broader organizational goals.
Guide
the
professional development
of team members, helping to attract and nurture talent that aligns with our mission and values.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to serve as a strategic partner at the senior level, ideally with experience across both nonprofit and for-profit sectors.
Expertise in financial management, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and control.
Proficient in analyzing and improving financial policies and procedures.
Strong analytical skills, capable of translating strategic visions into operational realities.
Collaborative and adaptable, committed to lifelong learning and teamwork.
Integrity-driven leadership style, suited to a dynamic, mission-focused environment.
Excellent communication abilities, both oral and written.
A commitment to team development and a passion for social impact work.
BS and CPA/CMA; MBA, highly preferred
A minimum of 7 years of broad finance experience, ideally starting in audit and progressing to roles that influence senior leadership decisions.
Prior experience in managing finance and payroll for a national nonprofit organization is highly desirable.
For this role specifically, we are targeting a
salary range
between
$120,000/year and $130,000/year , plus a comprehensive benefits plan; the difference in salary is typically determined by several factors, including geography in which the selected candidate resides, and alignment with qualifications and experience.
