Job Summary/General Purpose of JobAdvocates the Association's legal interests and provides advice and counsel to the Association's staff on legal issues to ensure compliance with federal, state and local law and Association policy, procedure, and past practice in order to mitigate or prevent legal exposure and enhance/maintain the Association's reputation and good standing.Functions as a subject matter expert in the areas of data privacy, data security, technology contracts, and transactionsEssential Job Functions and Responsibilities (listed in order of importance and/or time spent)Provides legal advice and counsel to Association staff. Conducts legal research, provides legal analysis, and prepares written opinions and other documents as required in the assigned practice area.Drafts or reviews/edits contracts for goods and services to ensure that the providers perform in compliance with the law and Association policies and procedures. May negotiate with external service providers regarding contracts.Approves/Disapproves proposed contracts based upon his/her review.Support assigned business units, including ABA IT, within the Association for all legal advice and counsel needs.Provides legal support to other areas of practice within the General Counsel's Office on major matters and/or initiatives.Performs other related duties as required.Required Education, Qualifications, ExperiencePossession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school.Member in good standing in possession of an active license to practice law in the State of Illinois.At least two years’ experience as a practicing attorney.At least two years’ experience providing legal advice to external or internal/corporate customers in contracts law, general corporate, data privacy/security, and technology contracts.At least two years contract development, review, preparation of counter offers, and interpretation of contracts with external service providers or other business entities.Preferred Education, Qualifications, ExperienceAt least two years’ experience as a practicing attorney in a private law firm or as corporate counsel for a commercial or not-for-profit entity with revenues in excess of $5 million annually.Experience in commercial real estate is a plus.
