Position:
Bus Driver Trainee
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Actively seeking to become CDL certified school bus driver. Serve as a bus monitor until eligible to drive a school bus. Attend required bus driver training sessions as required by trainer or supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:High School Diploma or GED preferredMust be at least 18 years of ageValid Texas Driver's License and ability to obtain Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class B, (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus Endorsements within 90 daysMaintan an acceptable MVR - Motor Vehicle Report, in accordance with the Texas school bus driving record evalMust pass annual mental and physical exams required by Texas DPSMust attend in-service training classes and safety meetingsMust meet all LPISD hiring criteria, including background screening that meets hiring eligibiltyMajor Responsibilities and Duties:
Attend all school bus driver training as required by trainer or supervisorComplete Texas CDL written exams to obtain Commercial Driver's License PermitSuccessfully complete behind-the-wheel instruction and subsequently pass Texas DPS skills and drivingPre-trip bus & emergency equipment inspection prior to leaving lot for every bus run/trip, including a proper air brake inspectionReport all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and mechanical failuresComplete all required reports in a timely mannerParticipate in head counts and roll calls as needed and complete required reportsSupervise students while they board the bus, are on the bus and as they leave the busEnsure students are crossing the street in accordance with district expectationsCommunicate with teachers and parents as needed regarding student behavior while on the busMaintain/Report student discipline issues according to transportation policy (verbal warnings, phone calls, write-ups)Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulationsObserve all traffic laws and safety regulations for school and report any hazardous conditions along the routeCorrect unsafe conditions in work area that can cause an accident and inform supervisor of any items that cannot be correctedOperate two-way radio equipment in accordance with departmental policyWork irregular hours as neededAttend and complete required training programs and maintain all necessary certifications and licensePerform any duties that may be assigned by the director or supervisor, up to and including extra runs, as neededMental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors
Continued sitting, reaching, climbing up and down steps and repetitive hand and arm motionsFrequent exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes, gasoline and diesel fuelAbility to enter/exit from bus and supervise student evacuation from bus in a timely manner during emergency situationsModerate lifting
Environment:
Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
Mental Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress, ability to communicate effectively (verbal)

$400/monthly
