Job Description / Essential Elements:

ALUM ROCK UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

BUS DRIVER

DEFINITIONUnder supervision, to operate a school bus over designated routes in transporting students; to clean, inspect and service buses; and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIESDrives a bus daily, or as assigned, over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging school children; escorts children across streets, stopping traffic as necessary; assists handicapped children; transports students and instructors on activity trips to various locations, making departure and arrival times as scheduled; operates two-way radio to maintain contact with dispatchers; maintains order among students during transport; inspects bus prior to operation using a designated safety checklist; follows District policies regarding student control and contact with parents, teachers, administrators and the public; cleans windows and the interior of the bus; reports mechanical defects and malfunctions; maintains records of miles driven and number of students transported; prepares student conduct and accident reports; washes and waxes buses; may assist in the service of District vehicles; may assist in transporting buses to repair shops or making road calls to provide emergency service.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Possession of a valid first aid qualification comparable to the Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate.

Possession of a valid unrestricted California Special Driver Certificate issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:Safe driving practices;Provisions of California Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicableto the operation of vehicles transporting school students;First aid practices.

Ability to:Drive a school bus safely and efficiently;Maintain order among students on a school bus;Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work;Read maps;Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

Requirements / Qualifications

BASIC FUNCTION:Under supervision, to operate a school bus over designated routes in transporting students; to clean, inspect and service buses; and to do related work as required.

Qualified applicants shall be invited to participate in a multiple-choice and performance test. Those that pass the test (written/performance) will be invited to an oral interview.

REQUIREMENTS:Possession of an appropriate California Driver's license issued by the State of Department of Motor Vehicles. (Class B License with passenger endorsement)

Must obtain a valid unrestricted California Special Driver Certificate (DL 45) and Medical Examiner's Certificate (DL 51) issued by the State of Department of Motor Vehicles
