General Responsibilities
The school bus assistant is responsible for providing assistance to general education and special education students while being transported on school buses to and from school. An employee in this class contributes to the care and safety of students by freeing the bus driver to operate the bus safely. The work involves physically assisting special education students and attending to their behavior. Employee performs duties according to specific guidelines and procedures for transportation of students with identified special needs.
Education and Experience
Completion of a high school education or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and some experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience working with children that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Essential Job Functions
Physically assists special education children on and off the bus; helps with wheel chair securement, assists children in braces/crutches, and secures children in seats, including child safety seats.Monitors and attends to children's behavior while bus is in route, reads and talks to students, comforts/cares for sick children, quiets children, and monitors behavioral and physical problems.Assists bus driver with safety inspection and general cleaning of the bus, to include safety vests and securement devices. General cleaning includes sweeping the floor, dusting, wiping seats and cleaning windows and removal of all trash.Assists the school bus driver in ensuring that all students are off the bus immediately following each run.Learns the student's names and their pickup and drop off locations. Assists substitute bus drivers with the directions for the bus route.Assists the bus driver in contacting parent or guardians regarding bus stop location or bus schedule changes.Assists the bus driver with completion of all mandatory and operational reports.Assists the bus driver in completing bus incident reports and student referrals.Assists the bus driver in conducting bus evacuation drills.Communicates with the dispatcher and field supervisor utilizing the two-way radio installed on the bus.Performs other related work as required.
