An NIH funded project will welcome an enthusiastic research project manager to join a collaborative research team working on a clinical trial studying the impact of clinical decision support (CDS) on diabetes care optimization. This work capitalizes on the concept of clinical decision support within Health Informatics. Our team incorporates health service research, information technology, education research, qualitative research, data science, biostatistics, health economics, population health, and implementation science. Key contributions of the new team member will include data management to support the analysis of primary and secondary outcomes of the study; data reviews and interpretation to advance project's manuscripts and future proposals; program management operations; and interaction with co-investigators and research support members to facilitate meeting the project's goals. Project Description:
Funded by a previous NIDDK K23 program, we developed, validated and piloted GlucAlertCDS. This is a real-time, electronic health records resource. The CDS tool recognizes diabetes optimization opportunities in the context of practice. Our work contributed to reductions in rates of glucose abnormalities and mediated shorter length of hospital stay, which was demonstrated in a previous pilot study. Our current R01 project is a clinical trial designed to study clinical, economic and practice performance outcomes of diabetes related to the implementation of GlucAlertCDS across care settings within the Penn State Health System. Our multidisciplinary team incorporates members from academic and community hospitals. The impact of our collaborative work derives from evaluating the impact of this innovative approach to help optimize the care of diabetes and glucose abnormalities in the hospital setting and transitions of care. The purpose is identifying potential solutions in clinical practice that can impact the care of a large number of patients across a health system, and which can be extrapolated to various health settings. Our study capitalizes on a rich database that support the main and secondary research questions of the program.
