Primary Purpose:

Implement district school health programs and provide direct services to meet the needs of the students and staff under the clinical supervision of the school health coordinator or school nurse (RN) in a way that is best suited to the population of the campus.

Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited nursing education programValid license to practice licensed vocational nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse ExaminersCertified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screeningCPR CertificationSpecial Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to maintain organized recordsCPI-Elementary CampusDrug Impairment Recognition training- Secondary CampusKnowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defectStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to implement policies and proceduresExperience:

Essential Job Functions:

Provide direct care utilizing a problem-solving approach as the basis for decision making in Vocational Nurse practice.Provide academic support within the classroomConduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacherHelp supervise students inside and outside the classroomKeep teacher informed of needs of studentsImplement established school health protocols.Participates in the planning of nursing care needs for students, and in modifying the nursing care plan for assigned students.Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).Implement a management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.Implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.Assist in continuing evaluation of campus health programs and make changes based on findings.Participate in implementation of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.Implement faculty and staff education as needed on health related topics.Participate in health counseling and instruction to individual students.Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.Assist in the evaluation of student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees and develops Individual Health Plan if supervising RN unable to attend, as needed.Participate in implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.Participate in home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of the principal.Communicate regularly with principal, health services coordinator, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues.Review and evaluate immunization records.Act as primary contact for campus work related injuries (workers' compensation).Prepare required workers' compensation documents and communicate as needed with the benefits coordinator in human resources for information and follow-up on claimants.Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Board of Nursing, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health services area.Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal.Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.Perform other duties as assigned by the RN supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.

Equipment used:

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, stethoscope, scale, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, glucometer personal computer, and copier.
