Substitute Bus Driver

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Twenty-one years of age or older.

2. Possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements (P and S endorsement with air brakes required.)

3. Have a good driving record, good health, be drug-free, and be subject to random drug testing.

4. Knowledge of the operation and function of a school bus and

governing laws.

5. Ability to read and properly complete necessary forms.

6. Deal effectively with children and adults.

7. Be able to meet the medical requirements as specified in the Code of

VA. (22.1-178).

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To transport students safely from home to school, from school to home, on field trips, and any other activity requiring the use of a school bus.

REPORTS TO:

Transportation Manager

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all functions necessary in transporting students in a safe and comfortable manner.Conducts daily proper pre-trip inspection of bus to be driven.Operates a manual (clutch) transmission school bus in a safe manner.Operates an automatic transmission school bus in a safe manner.Operates the vehicle according to the laws of the local, state, and national governments and according to rules and regulations of the Cumberland County School Board and the Department of Education.Enforces safety rules.Cares for the assigned vehicle to assure a clean and safe environment for all passengers.Develops positive rapport with schools and with the Pupil Transportation Department.Reports to Transportation Coordinator all hazardous, dangerous, unhealthy or unsanitary conditions of the school grounds.Reports to Transportation Coordinator all suspected or known cases of child abuse and any drastic change in behavior.Uses sound judgment in handling emergencies involving the bus and/or the students.Manually operates passenger bus entrance door without difficulty while seated in the driver's seat.Activates the brake with the right foot.Moves from a seated position in the driver's seat to the rear or side of the bus where the emergency door is located, open the emergency door and exits the bus.Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Keeps the bus clean inside and outside (mirrors, lights, lenses, etc).Keeps up-to-date route sheets on the bus at all times.Adheres to time schedule picking up students and reporting to schools.Exhibits unbiased attitude toward all students.Stays informed of schedule changes and how to handle them.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy and evaluation by objective.
