SUMMARYMust possess a Virginia school bus driver's license with airbrakes.Safe driving record.Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.Be in good physical health as verified by a qualified physician.Be of good character as verified by two individuals.Be free of tuberculosis as verified by a qualified physician.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following.

Obey all traffic laws.Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.Maintains discipline when students are on bus.Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.Keeps assigned bus clean.Keeps to assigned schedule.Conduct a pre-trip inspection according to DMV requirements.Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.Discharges students only at authorized stops.Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.Transports only authorized students.Reports all accidents and completes required reports.Enforces all rules and regulations pertaining to the transportation of students.Inspects transportation passes to prevent unauthorized travel.Collects and turns over to the appropriate principal or director of transportation those personal items left on bus and not claimed within a reasonable period of time by the owner.Turns in required paperwork at designated deadlines.Follow all rules and regulations set forth by the Division for employment.Other duties may be assigned.QUALIFICATIONS

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Be at least 18 years of age.Have sufficient physical and mental ability to safely operate a school bus and/or perform required job tasks.Furnish a statement or copy of records from the Department of Motor Vehicles showing that the person, within the preceding five years, has not been convicted of a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs, convicted of a charge of refusing to take a blood or breath test, convicted of a felony, or assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program pursuant to § 18.2-271.1 of the Code of Virginia or, within the preceding 12 months, has not been convicted of two or more moving traffic violations or has not been required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to § 46.2-498 of the Code of Virginia.Have or willing to obtain a valid Virginian Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements with air brake certification.Be able to read and write; to understand verbal and written instructions in English; and to communicate with fellow employees, students and transportation supervisors.Provide a reference statement, upon initial employment, signed by two reputable citizens of Nelson County, attesting to his or her good moral character.Successfully complete the Nelson County Public Schools bus driver training course. (Returning drivers must be re trained if the time elapsed since last employment with Nelson County Public Schools exceeds five months. This also includes returning from extended sick leave, leave of absence or Worker's Compensation, whose leave time exceeds five months.)Have a physical examination of a scope prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education. The results of such examination shall be reported on the prescribed form and certify that he/she is physically able to perform job requirements. A physical examination is required upon initial employment and thereafter prior to the beginning of the new contract year.Successfully take a tuberculin test upon initial employment to prove tuberculosis free.Provide appropriate identification to complete the Federal I-9 form.Must sign release statement to obtain criminal record history.Provide two employer references from current or most recent employment sources.Pass alcohol and controlled substance tests on initial employment and thereafter submit to periodic, unannounced, random alcohol and controlled substance tests throughout the calendar year.PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

A person may not drive a school bus unless he or she is physically qualified to do so and has submitted a "School Bus Driver's Application for Physician's Certificate" signed by the applicant and the doctor for the applicable employment period.A person must pass the mental and physical requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia as set forth below:Has no loss of foot, leg, hand, or arm which interferes with the ability to control and drive a school bus with reasonable accommodations.Has no impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or arm or other defects or limitation likely to interfere with the ability to control and safely drive a school bus with reasonable accommodations.Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus currently requiring insulin for control.Has no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis, or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure.Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of a respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to control and drive a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.Has no known current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease, which would interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of epilepsy or any other condition, which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or any loss of ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.Has no mental health, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely.Has both distant and near visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.First perceives a forced-whispered voice in the better ear at not less than five feet with or without the use of a hearing aid, or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard Z24.5-1951. Personnel who wear the hijab (headscarf) for religious reasons must take the hearing test with the hijab in place.Does not use an amphetamine, a narcotic, or any habit-forming drug without appropriate physician supervision.Has no current clinical diagnosis of alcoholism.Must be able to successfully complete all the following agility tests:Climb and descend the front steps of a 64-passenger bus without pausing.Open and close manually operated 64-passenger bus entrance doors without difficulty while seated in the driver's seat.Activate the brake pedal with the right foot in 3/4 of a second or less after removing the

right foot from the throttle pedal.Depress clutch pedal with left foot for manual transmission (when applicable)Move from a seated position in the driver's seat of a 64-passenger bus to the rear of the bus, open the emergency door and exit the bus, all within 20 seconds.Operate the driving controls using both arms simultaneously and quickly. For example,activate master panel switches or shift gears while keeping one hand on the steering wheel of a 64-passenger bus traveling 25 miles per hour.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
