Job Description
The Director of the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum (CEAM) is tasked with organizing every aspect of the curation, promotion, and mounting of exhibitions at CEAM during the Academic Year [September through June], coordinating the CEAM Artist Residency. A typical Academic Year will include 5-7 rotating exhibitions that feature visiting artists, traveling exhibits, faculty creative work, and the BFA and BA student portfolio exhibitions at the end of each semester. The Director organizes and promotes programming related to the exhibitions and the artist residency, including lectures, workshops and class visits, symposia, and performances. Acting as the liaison between
different departments on campus and Visiting Artists and Artists-in-Residence, the Director creates and promotes cross-discipline opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. The Director oversees budgets for CEAM and collections, including grants, as well as prepares and manages grants. The Director manages the day-to-day maintenance of the galleries, and supervises two student work-grants, one Art History student intern, as well as up to five student gallery assistants each semester.
Responsibilities
Museum
Establishes an annual (September through June) exhibition schedule of national, regional, and/or local artists, student and faculty exhibitions, and presentations of the permanent collection.Organizes and promotes programming related to the exhibitions and the artist residency, including lectures, workshops and class visits, symposia, and performances.Oversees all openings and First Friday events during the academic year.Promotes museum exhibits and programs both within and outside of the institution in collaboration with the Division of Marketing and Communication and College departments.Liaise with departments on campus and Visiting Artists and Artists-in-Residence, to create and promote cross-discipline opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.Builds relationships with community stakeholders to develop new initiatives, collaborations, and art related educational programs and to promote these programs in the community.Oversees installation of rotating exhibition, including hanging and display, labels, lighting, and technical needs, with the assistance of student gallery assistants.Organize sand oversees 1-2 artists per semester as a part of the CEAM Artist Residency.Develops short term and long-term budgets.Manages and trains work-study students, interns, and gallery assistants.Facilitates appropriate use of the space for educational purposes and programming (e.g., public lectures, Learning Community events, etc.).Liaise with the Office of Institutional Advancement to raise funds for the museum.Assess the museum space for possible modifications to ensure compliance with museum standards to facilitate borrowing from other collections and museums.
Qualifications
A master's degree and 18 graduate hours in a teaching subject. In exceptional cases, outstanding professional experience may be presented in lieu of formal academic preparation. The institution must justify such cases on an individual basis.
