/ 307-777-8926ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Public Defender's Office, overseeing all operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services.Oversee the provision of comprehensive legal defense for indigent clients in criminal cases, ensuring their constitutional rights are protected throughout the legal process.Advise the Governor on matters related to public defense and contribute to policy discussions aimed at improving the state's criminal justice system.Occasionally represent clients in high-profile or complex cases to set a standard of excellence for the office.Ensure efficient case management practices are in place and adhered to by all public defenders within the office.Work collaboratively with the State Legislature to advance policies and laws that enhance the public defense system. Provide testimony, review legislative proposals, and engage in dialogue with lawmakers to ensure the needs and challenges of indigent defense are understood and addressed.Update and establish departmental policies, prepare and defend office budget, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements, demonstrating strategic foresight.Engage in public speaking and community outreach to educate and advocate for the rights of the indigent population.Recruit, train, and mentor public defenders and support staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:Must be a member in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar.Preference may be given to candidates with at least eight years of work experience in prosecutorial or criminal defense legal representation.Preference may be given to candidates with prior extensive managerial experience.Preference may be given to candidates who have prior work experience defending or prosecuting capital offense cases.KNOWLEDGE:Comprehensive understanding of criminal law, procedure, and constitutional rights, especially those relevant to indigent defense.Familiarity with state and federal legislation affecting criminal justice and public defense.Proficiency in policy development, decision-making, and public speaking.Ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with the mission and goals of the Public Defender’s Office.Ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including state agencies, the judiciary, law enforcement, and the legislature.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:None - See "Preferences"PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Travel will be required.NOTES:FLSA: ExemptThis is an AT-WILL position which serves at the pleasure of the Governor.Successful candidate must pass a background check.
