The Director, Retina Practices is responsible for leading and managing multiple eye care practices that specialize in retina ophthalmology, ensuring the highest quality and cost-effective operations. This role includes overseeing practice administrators, resolving conflicts, maintaining compliance with regulations, and improving workflow efficiency. The Director ensures excellent patient care, maximizes patient satisfaction, and supports staff development. Responsibilities also include managing doctor relationships, supporting recruitment and onboarding, achieving financial goals, and promoting regional growth. Additionally, the Director handles marketing initiatives, acquisition integrations, and special projects, while providing strategic direction and maintaining high engagement among colleagues.

This is a remote position.

(Role & Responsibilities)

Leads Practice Administrators

Provides leadership and direction for operations of multiple practices to deliver the highest quality & cost-effective eye care.

Ensures all clinics, programs and staff work cohesively to support excellent patient care.

Resolves conflicts that occur in the region while protecting the professional and legal rights of all involved.

Conducts on-site visits to practices to monitor physical location, attend meetings and review issues concerning financial, personnel and overall operational matters.

Maintains compliance with government and third-party payor requirements.

Resolves problems related to staffing, utilization of facilities, equipment and supplies.

Analyzes systems and procedures and initiates changes to improve and maximize workflow and efficiency. Maintains and compiles statistics when necessary or upon the request of leadership.

Recommends to COO &/or RVP practice improvements including construction, renovation, and purchase of equipment.

Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional development to keep pace with the trends in health care administration.

Patient Support

Achieves patient experience and satisfaction goals for multiple practices.

Maximizes patient flow.

Maintains standards of quality care.

Manages patient- and staff-related escalations.

Manage People / Teams

Maintains high colleague engagement and positive relationships to enhance productivity and the quality of work life in multiple practices.

Empowers colleagues in region to be innovative and action-oriented while advancing a culture of accountability with clearly established lines of authority and decision-making within region.

Works with practice administrators to develop/implement performance goals and objectives. Determines merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary actions for direct reports and approves multiple practices.

Empowers and develops regional operations staff to contribute to overall success of organization.

Hires, develops, and exits Practice Administrators.

Aggressively manage and address people needs for multi-practice staff.

Builds high performing regional team.

Supports colleague recognition & appreciation programs.

Sets and achieves retention goals for the multiple practices.

Manage Doctors

Primary owner of doctor relationships in the region.

Manages doctor escalations that Practice Admin cannot resolve (e.g., conduct issues, clinical issues, investigations, etc.).

Supports new doctor recruiting and onboarding.

Owns decision making of new hires, needs of the practice, data analysis of market area.

Onboarding – marketing & finance support

Achieves Doctor retention goals by region.

Works with People Team to develop and execute retention plan.

Supports doctor offboarding process.

Effective Communication – Regional Level

Accountable for New Practice Admin development & acclimation.

Financial Responsibilities

Ensures optimal financial outcomes in the region.

Reviews monthly financial statements with the Practice Admins to identify variances, concerns, explanations, and solutions.

Interprets monthly and annual reporting to assure budget compliance.

Assesses operating performance and monitors for budget compliance.

Develops regional budget with Practice Admins.

Optimizes payor mix.

Assesses the operating and capital budgets and monitors for compliance.

Marketing / Promotion

Promotes growth within the region.

Monitors census and marketing efforts.

Delivers regional marketing needs as defined by marketing team and COO or RVP.

Recognizes market trends & provides solutions / delivers opportunities.

Owns referral building in region.

Weighs in relative to effective regional marketing approach and tactics.

Follow-ups to ensure marketing tactics are executed / getting results.

Implements marketing plans which include assisting with the development of the corporate strategy, promotion of the practices and their professionals, and product/service assessment.

Represents region at public and professional meetings and conferences as required.

Participates in organization’s communication and public relations programs

Special Projects

Executes special projects as needed for COO, RVP or Leadership Team.

Creates special projects for region as necessary.

Strategy

Provides strategic direction to the Practice Administrators.

Participates in the development of regional goals, objectives and policies; implement accordingly.

What You Need to Have

(Qualifications)

Education:

A bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field is required.

A master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field is preferred.

Skills:

Experience:

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in managing retina ophthalmology practices

Proven track record of achieving patient satisfaction and operational efficiency

Experience in financial management, including budgeting and financial reporting

Experience in staff recruitment, development, and retention

Experience in managing doctor relationships and addressing escalations

Experience in marketing and promotional activities for healthcare services

Experience in an ophthalmology strongly preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

Relevant professional certifications in healthcare administration or management are advantageous.
