Summary Description

Under general supervision, drives a bus over an assigned route to transport passengers according to schedule and in a safe and courteous manner; collects fares from passengers; prepares and maintains daily passenger reports; and performs a variety of pre-trip and preventative maintenance functions.Representative Duties

Drives a bus over a designated route to transport passengers in accordance with established time schedule; follows all rules and regulations.Picks-up and off loads passengers at pre-arranged locations; assists passengers in boarding and departing the bus as necessary; loads and unloads wheelchairs.Collect fares and keeps records of amounts collected and distances traveled.Ensures passenger safety on the bus; maintains order among passengers on the bus.Makes regular inspections of bus including pre-trip safety inspections following established check lists; check belts, oil, and water levels.Performs minor repair and maintenance of bus; regularly wash bus; fuels bus; picks up trash and sweeps bus.Operates a variety of communications equipment, including copy machines, telephones, fax, email, Internet and other various computer systems.Maintains daily records of bus operation; prepares a daily cash report of money turned in, fare box readings, and other related information; prepares clear, concise, and comprehensive reports, forms, memorandums, correspondence, and records using correct sentence structure, grammar, and spelling concerning accidents, breakdowns, mechanical defects, etc.Responds to requests for information from the public, City departments and outside agencies.Answer questions regarding routes and time schedules concerning the Pass Area bus lines and connecting lines to the Riverside Transit Authority.Maintains radio contact with the dispatchers on assignments and status.Performs dispatching and office duties on an as needed basis.Performs related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:Safety principles and regulations applicable to bus operations, including the California Vehicle Code and local city traffic regulations.Proper operation and maintenance of buses.Vehicle inspection principles and practices.Geography of the City.Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.Methods and techniques of public relations and customer service.Basic principles and procedures of record keeping.Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:Operate a large passenger bus effectively and safely.Maintain order among passengers on a bus.Properly load, tie down, and secure wheelchairs on the bus.Apply applicable state and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to transportation as well as administrative and departmental policies and procedures.Maintain simple records and make reports.Deal courteously with passengers and the public.Perform mathematic computations.Demonstrate operational characteristics of standard office equipment.Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, rules and regulations.Possess effective interpersonal skills, using tact, patience and courtesy.Use sound professional judgment in the application of policy, procedures, and laws in situations arising in the course and scope of employment.Perform routine multi-tasking functionsUnderstand and work within the course and scope of duties, authority and responsibilities.Relate effectively to people of a variety of cultures, languages, disabling conditions and socioeconomic situations.Analyze situations and apply departmental rules and regulations effectively, as well as common sense where no guidelines are readily available.Respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately to inquiries and requests from the public.Work safely and adhere to principles of safety.Work independently in the absence of supervision.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Experience, Education and Licenses

Education/Training:Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.Experience:One year of experience as a general passenger bus driver desired.License or Certificate:Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License.Must obtain a California Class B Drivers License, Air Brake and Passenger Endorsements within ninety (90) days of employment and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment.Must obtain a Vehicle Transit Training certificate and maintain possession of such certificate during the course of employment.Must obtain a DMV medical examiner's certificate within thirty days of employment and maintain possession of such certificate during the course of employment.PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS : The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Near and far vision is required in order to read work related documents and perform bus driving related duties. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbent must be willing to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
