The Position:
SGH seeks a rising engineering leader interested in growing the firm’s civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering practices for industrial facilities in the midwestern United States and Canada. This position will be part of our Structural Engineering team, providing a wide array of design, repair, and rehabilitation engineering services, which may include engineering of industrial structures, process facility arrangement and design, investigation, repair, and rehabilitation of deteriorated or underperforming structures, and existing facility modifications. Typical project work includes:
Lead the analysis and design of projects involving steel, concrete, and masonry structures, with emphasis on industrial structures and related infrastructure.
Plan and implement design or analysis tasks using a variety of building codes and industrial standards.
Help mentor and develop less experienced engineers.
Manage client relationships within the context of project work.
Assist in the preparation of drawings and specifications.
Plan and conduct site investigations to document existing conditions or investigate claims related to damage, overload, accident, fire, or similar.
Execute the construction-administration phase of projects, including bid assistance, submittal review, site meetings, observations of completed work, etc.
Interest and ability to co-publish articles/papers.
Support contractor operations such as designing concrete mixtures, developing lifting plans, planning special operations, or designing shoring and access plans.
Job Responsibilities:
The position responsibilities will be generally consistent with ASCE Grade IV and will include:
Preparing proposals, including budgeting and personnel requirements.
Planning work for review and approval by your supervisor.
Conducting assignments defined in terms of the nature of the expected results, requiring only general guidance on the approach to solving unusual problems.
Managing a complex project or part of a project with responsibility for all pertinent supervisory work, evaluating results, and preparing reports with minimal assistance.
Delegating tasks using a coaching relationship for supervising the technical work of project staff.
Managing direct client contact within existing work while building and nurturing relationships with external project team members.
Actively contributing to internal technical training.
Drafting complex letters, formal reports, letter reports, specifications, and proposals with minimal supervisor guidance.
Leading technical and/or project discussions with clients and external project teams.
What You’ll Need:
8+ years of relevant structural engineering or engineering mechanics experience and expertise in a relevant field, preferably including experience designing non-building structures and/or critical infrastructure of significant scale.
Experience in manufacturing, material handling, oil and gas, waterfront structures, mining, or a related field.
MS or PhD with a concentration in Structural Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited university.
Professional Licensure required, including SE if eligible or applicable.
Strong interpersonal skills. Skilled in personal time management and project scope management.
Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and integrate the work of several technical experts into an effective solution.
Strong background in structural analysis, structural dynamics, structural design, and engineering mechanics.
Prior exposure to similar project types and awareness of related outside technical resources, including process industry standards.
Demonstrated advanced technical knowledge within your area of technical expertise.
Experience with structural analysis computer programs, such as SAP2000, ANSYS, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, RISA 3D, and SAFE.
Proficiency with the use of computer programming and scripting tools for engineering computations, such as Mathcad, MATLAB, Python, and/or VBA, is preferred.
Willingness to travel to out-of-state project sites on occasion and ability to travel to remote job sites not accessible by public transportation.
Valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.
