The successful Lead Rail Switch Operator candidate can be either a current rail facility operator or someone with a willingness to learn new skills and abide by the extensive training and direction Savage will provide. They will be responsible to switch rail cars safely and timely within the new Savage facility in Gregory, TX while delivering “worry-free consistency” to our customer by safely and efficiently operating in a large-scale yard supporting a petrochemical plant.Here is what you will be doing:
Leading a crew of 3 for the daily railcar movement in one of three switching areas at the Savage Gregory, TX operationAssist Operations Manager with training and mentoring a new Team MemberWill operate a locomotive – Savage will provide training and certificationWill work with two other crew members to safely perform one of several railcar movements: classifying inbound trains, pulling cars from storage, spotting railcars at requested locations and building outbound trains for required pick upThe Switchman is expected to be cross trained and willing to assist in the different rail-centric functions at the facilitySwitch teams will need to respond to requests for movement on short notice but will primarily operate off of detailed switch lists provided by the facility terminal mastersRequirements of a successful Lead Rail Switch Operator:
Ability to understand and follow Savage rail operating procedures and policies based on extensive classroom and field trainingWilling to, on occasion, travel to other sites to assist them in switching their facilities and training requirementsCan read, write, and understand EnglishAble to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervisionMust pass a written and skills test on the type of work that he or she will be performingAbility to work alternating 3-4, 4-3 shifts that will include holidays and weekendsTwo years of experience in the rail industry is preferred but not required if willing to adhere to Savage rail training and best practicesValid Drivers LicenseHigh School Graduate or GED equivalentHere are some of the physical requirements of this role:
Switch person will work outdoors every day and as a result will be exposed to the elementsSwitch person must be physically able to do the following:Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safelyOperate railcar hand brakesOperate rail switchesMust have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of timeAbility to lift 50 lbs.Should also have the ability to use basic hand toolsAble to work rotating shift schedule and overtime when neededAdditional Information:
