As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Geospatial Scientist who specializes in gridded data evaluations to join our project team supporting the NWS Office of Water Prediction. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing frameworks to evaluate the quality and performance of gridded hydrometeorological fields (e.g., precipitation, snowpack, etc.) and flood inundation maps produced by the Office of Water Prediction. Your work will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability of our hydrologic forecasts and ultimately, in protecting communities from natural hazards.
Responsibilities
Duties of the Geospatial Scientist - Gridded Evaluation Specialist, will include the following:Develop robust frameworks to evaluate the accuracy and skill of gridded hydrometeorological fields being input to or generated by OWP models (i.e. National Water Model).Design and execute comprehensive evaluation procedures for flood inundation maps, assessing their effectiveness and identifying areas for improvement in the existing tools.Analyze evaluation results, draw meaningful conclusions, and provide actionable recommendations for enhancing forecast accuracy and model performance.Document your findings in clear and concise reports and communicate complex technical information to a wide audience.Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in forecasting methodologies and evaluation techniques.Qualifications
The Ideal Geospatial Scientist - Gridded Evaluation Specialist, will have the following:
M.S. in a physical science field (e.g., hydrology, meteorology, atmospheric science)2+ years of experienceDemonstrated proficiency in geospatial statistics and uncertainty quantification methodsStrong understanding of principles governing flood inundation processesFamiliarity with tools and techniques for manipulating and analyzing gridded fields and geospatial data (e.g., GIS, remote sensing)Solid programming skills in Python and/or RExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a collaborative teamAbout Lynker
