BASIC FUNCTION

To develop and implement the Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) annual resource development plan to support specific Texas Medical Association (TMA) initiatives and TMAF – programs and operations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS

Develop and execute an integrated resource development plan (RDP) consisting of annual, major and planned giving, supported by strategic stewardship, communications/promotion and donor recognition efforts. The primary goal of the plan is to ensure TMAF has the resources to fund specific TMA health improvement, science and education initiatives and meet TMAF operational and capacity building needs. To accomplish this, the Development Director will employ these and other activities as needed, to accomplish this responsibility:

Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects; build meaningful relationships with donors to advance the mission of TMAF;

Oversee and work with the TMAF Data Manager who is responsible for researching corporate, foundation, institutional, and individual donors and prospects to inform solicitation plans and fundraising goals;

Work closely with the TMAF Executive Director (ED) and members of TMAF committees and board to achieve strategic organization and financial goals, in particular the Development Committee;

Research, write and submit tailored funding proposals, solicitations and grant applications to meet RDP goals;

Create plans to carry out with the ED that increase the number of donors in each TMAF giving society including PULSE, Leadership Society Major Gift, Planned Gift;

Collaborate with the TMAF Operations and Development Assistant and Data Manager to ensure accurate reporting, analysis, gift acknowledgement, gift follow up, fulfillment of donor requests and recognition, and RDP campaign/appeal implementation.

Build on a successful annual fundraising gala.

Successful solicitation of corporate and individual sponsorships to meet stated gala financial goals;

Secure contracts with needed vendors e.g. photographer, decorator, auctioneer and ensure these functions are overseen at the gala (e.g. by staff and/or volunteers);

Balance innovation with capacity to produce an event that includes various onsite fundraising opportunities (e.g., silent, live and or online auction, raffle, etc.);

Coordinate event promotion in the context of overall TMAF and TMA communications, ensure volunteer recruitment and training (carried out by the Operations and Development Assistant) is adequate to meet onsite needs, work with TMA meeting planning staff on hotel specific event needs, e.g., space requirements, catering, audiovisuals, etc.

Carry out meaningful post event analysis to improve future galas.

Represent TMAF at official TMA, TMAA and TMAF functions as needed, including limited travel and overnight hotel stays (paid by TMAF). Use the structure, operations and relationships of TMA and its related organizations to increase and deepen donor relationships.

Perform other related duties as directed or required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

None. Collaborative leadership of a team of staff and volunteers to plan and carry out the duties of the position.

INDEPENDENCE/SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Duties are performed independently to achieve assigned objectives; however, methods and procedures may not be specifically defined. Employee may be required to develop or research appropriate methods and procedures to be used.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience

Required: Eight to ten years of relevant experience in fundraising, demonstrated relationship management, knowledge and experience using donor database software and other types of software that generate reports and data to achieve fundraising results and excellent communication skills with proven record of success. Bachelor’s degree. Experience working independently as well as in collaborative settings and in an accountable manner to coworkers, member leaders and donors. Experience and poise in working with high achieving individuals.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to positively engage with donors and prospects. Enthusiasm for the mission of TMA and TMAF and initiative needed to build on a successful development program and take it to the next level. Results driven with excellent time and project management skills.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to deal effectively with other TMA employees. Must be organized, able to work with interruptions and handle multiple tasks. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan work, evaluate facts, determine courses of action, apply best practices and deal effectively with members and the public.

Must be able to lift and carry at least 25 lbs. for short distances and duration.
