The City of Irving, Texas (est. pop. 250,000) is strategically situated between Dallas and Fort Worth, positioning the city as a major corporate hub with a robust economy.The city is seeking a Municipal Court Judge to ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Judges preside over various trials and hearings, including non-jury and jury trials, arraignments, stolen property dispositions, and dangerous animal hearings. Furthermore, judges make determinations on indigency, and review requests for continuances and other legal motions and serve as Dallas County Magistrates. Therefore, judges must be available 24/7, 365 days per year to perform magistrate duties, including authorizing search and arrest warrants. The Municipal Court Judge is one of three (3) Full Time judges, appointed by the city council and serving a two-year term at the Irving Municipal Court. The Court is a high-volume municipal court of record. Upon expiration of the initial term, the position is up for reappointment for additional two-year terms.LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIESThe new municipal court judge will have various leadership opportunities to significantly impact the community, the judicial system, and their own professional growth, including the following:Court Processes Improvement and Technology Integration: Contribute to the continuous implementation and effectiveness of existing case management systems designed to effectively improve the speed of justice and the integration of technologies in the court system in the City of Irving, TX.Interagency Collaboration: Foster effective collaboration with law enforcement, social services, city departments, and other government agencies to create holistic approaches to justice that addresses underlying social and community challenges, including collaborating with the North Texas Behavioral Health Authority, the multi-stakeholder Irving Behavioral Health Leadership Team (BHLT), community school district(s), and myriads of non-governmental organizations.Judicial Standing Orders: Contribute to the review, update or development of policies, procedures, and standing orders, and professional development to contribute to the city’s commitment to excellence in service delivery, high standards, and judicial system improvements.Community Outreach: Explore opportunities to build trust and understanding between the court and the community by exploring and participating in community outreach programs or activities to educate the public about the law and the role of a municipal court judge.Innovative Court Programs: Develop or enhance specialized court programs to address specific needs of certain populations and recommend programs that provide alternatives to incarceration for eligible offenders.The starting salary range for this position is $165,000 - $195,000. The city participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System at a seven percent employee contribution rate, a municipal 2:1 matching ratio, 5 years to vested status, and full retirement eligibility after 20 years of service credit. Additionally, the City of Irving offers a supplemental benefit retirement plan, 457 Plan, and a full range of leave. The City requires that the individual selected as a finalist establish residency within the city limits and be a registered voter of the City.To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, as required by state law. Additionally, they should have at least three years of combined experience as a judge or prosecutor in municipal government and be a member of the State Bar of Texas.This opportunity will remain posted until filled.
