SummaryIn alignment with Gift of Life Michigan's core purpose and core values, the Procurement Surgeon performs surgical organ recovery. The incumbent is a licensed physician with experience in organ donation, surgical organ recovery, organ transplantation, and surgically recovers deceased donor organs for transplantation and research.

Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe following job duties and responsibilities are stated in broad terms and not intended to be inclusive. Those in bold are essential duties of the position:

Perform surgical organ recovery to local and national standards for organ transplantation.

Assist the VP, Donation Optimization, Associate VP, Clinical Operations, or designee in efforts to develop and modify organ recovery protocols designed to maximize the number of donors and number of organs transplanted.

Provide Gift of Life staff with education on different aspects of surgical organ recovery and preservation techniques.

Maintain knowledge level of current practices of organ procurement.

Participate in the proceedings of the Gift of Life Michigan organ committee and advisory board.

Respond to Gift of Life employee requests for assistance calls.

Train Organ Recovery Specialists (ORS) in First Assist role, confirms & communicates competency.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or ExperienceRequired

Licensed State of Michigan Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy

Board Certified in the American Board of Surgery

3 years' experience as a surgeon performing organ procurement or organ transplant operations.

Experience in deceased organ donor management, both brain dead and Donation after Circulatory Death.

Preferred

Completion of an Abdominal Transplant Fellowship

Prior experience in a healthcare organization, transplant center, or organ/tissue procurement organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

Written and verbal fluency in English.

Ability to exercise initiative, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook and Teams and other technology systems used in business operations.

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.

Demonstrate attention to detail.

Demonstrate proficient surgical skills in transplant and organ recovery.
