JOB SUMMARY

The Finance Director plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial health and sustainability of Avenues for Youth. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance provides sound financial management, oversight and analysis, collaborates closely with the Executive Director, and serves as staff liaison with the board finance committee. As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Finance works collaboratively with other departments and areas to ensure the organization's financial goals align with its mission and strategic objectives.

Avenues is currently engaged in a capacity campaign to build a new shelter and headquarters in North Minneapolis. For the next two-three years, the Director of Finance will provide oversight to Avenues commercial real estate consultants and development consultants on campaign budget and financing.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for the position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Oversee all financial and accounting activities, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
  • Maintain all general ledgers accounts, reconcile bank statements, conduct monthly and year-end closing procedures, and prepare the monthly financial statements using generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Manage Avenues' annual audit and 990 preparations with outside CPA.
  • Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial performance, providing regular reports and analysis to the ED and Board.
  • Provide strategic financial guidance to senior leadership, supporting decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Identify and implement operational efficiencies and reduce organizational financial risks whenever possible
  • Communicate with the Board Treasurer and act as staff liaison to the Board Finance Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Program and Fundraising leaders to develop the annual budget and track expenses, ensuring alignment with grant requirements and donor restrictions.
  • Manage government grants, including billing/drawdowns, and complete reporting requirements.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team, supporting the execution of Avenues' mission and vision and upholding the organization's values.


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Finance or Accounting, or equivalent experience in a similar position for 10+ years, non-profit finance preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in non-profit management.
  • Strong organizational development, project management, personnel management, and budget skills
  • Strong technology skills, including Excel. Experience and competence with QuickBooks is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and multitask.
  • Excellent people skills with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.
  • Comfort with tasks ranging from daily to specialized.

Pay Range: $85,000 to $97,000
