POSITION DESCRIPTION & OVERVIEW

Title: Associate Controller

Reports To: Director of Finance

Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8am - 4 pm, Daytime, Schedule will vary according to business needs

Compensation: $105k - $115k (DOQ)

Job Classification: Salaried-Exempt, Full-time, 40 hours/week

Union Representation: This position is not a union represented position.

The Associate Controller will be reporting directly to the Director of Finance in performing routine accounting tasks to including managing the current team within the Accounting Department.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS
  • Oversee processing of all transactions, including Grant/Contracts billings, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll-related transactions, and all account reconciliation processes; maintain clean data in the finance systems, reconciled to source systems and data
  • Plan and oversee month-end close, annual audit, and other financial compliance needs
  • Lead financial statement preparation, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards, and internal controls
  • Assist in analyzing financial performance metrics, trends, and variance, and provide actionable insights and recommendations to drive informed decision-making
  • Develop and monitor internal controls & process improvement
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with departments to support business initiatives and drive financial performance
  • Drive documentation of policies and procedures
  • Manage and develop accounting staff (team of 4)
  • Assist in strategic leadership and direction for the accounting function, including financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
  • Evaluate, implement, and manage accounting system updates and possible add-on tools that enhance Agate's financial management capabilities
  • Contribute to business initiatives, investment opportunities, and cost-saving strategies to optimize Agate's financial stability
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in education opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • A minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of accounting experience
  • Experienced managing and developing staff
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP, non-profit, etc.), financial reporting (including 990), and budgeting processes
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and detail oriented
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient using accounting software and MS Office tools
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • CPA certificate and license
  • Accounting or Finance experience in a non-profit setting, particularly around Grants and Contracts
  • Federal (Single) Audit experience
  • Two or three (2-3) years experience managing and developing staff
  • Knowledge of, or experience with Sage Intacct

REFERRAL BONUS PROGRAM

Agate Housing and Services offers a $250 bonus to employees who refer qualified candidates for current openings. To be eligible for rewards, candidates must be hired as permanent full or part-time employees (this excludes on-call, employees, temporary employees, interns or contract workers).
