The Los Angeles Times is seeking a full-time film critic to provide authoritative insight into the whole of cinema: Hollywood blockbusters, under-the-radar indies, titles from other countries, classics and everything in between.The crux of the work will be reviewing movies on a weekly basis in an engaging, stylish and timely manner consistent with the deeply informed expertise that has long differentiated The Times' film criticism. The best candidates will have the confidence to be independent in their tastes, always with the primary goal of entertaining the reader with thoughtfulness.The film critic also will be expected to weigh in on issues of moviegoing at large, films in conversation with each other, buzzy topics of the day and prescient thoughts about where the artform is going. Long-form essays will be part of the purview, as will occasional thematic round-ups and year-end lists. Contributions to group projects will be a part of the workload.The best candidates will be able to respond quickly and authoritatively to the deaths of major film artists. Candidates should have a custodial zeal for the history of cinema in total and should be able to celebrate the best of Hollywood, to weigh in on awards races and champion titles that might otherwise get overlooked.Requirements:A minimum of six years of experience focused on reviewing movies or writing other forms of film criticismAn ability to respond to news and to use the platform of a critic to engage readers in timely cultural conversationsExperience writing for digital audiences and an ability to frame commentary in smart, effective waysA commitment to accuracy and precisionA track record for strong journalistic ethics and good judgment in questions of taste or legal considerationsCuriosity about various forms of storytellingA collaborative spirit and inclusive approach in working with others, including various reporters, assigning editors and colleagues in copy editing, design and audience engagementThis position is listed as Columnist/Critic in the Los Angeles Times Guild. It will be based in Los Angeles and regularly will require attendance at L.A.-area events as well as team meetings at The Times' El Segundo, Calif., office.
