July 15, 2024 .Projected start date: September 13, 2024Projected end date: December 20, 2024Wage: $16-18.50/hourGENERALThe Outdoor Science School Trail Leader reports to the Program Directors and works to instruct and lead participants in their programs while maintaining the safety of participants and the program's integrity. Counselors should enjoy working with youth, appreciate the outdoors, and follow the IROEC and Scouting America Missions.The mission of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.RESPONSIBILITIES- Work with all age groups; elementary, middle school, high school, and adult programming.- Ability to maintain a positive focused learning environment in a variety of situations and settings.- Exceptional attention to detail concerning participants' needs.- Comfortable leading songs, skits, and large group games.- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of California's ecosystems.- Use teaching techniques to dynamically present facts and underlying S.T.E.A.M. principles to students. Able to engage students in discussions.- Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance with American Camp Association and Scouting America.- Works with supervisors to promote positive behavior and culture.- Assists in the inventory and maintenance of equipment.- Works as part of a team with other IROEC staff members and uses interpersonal communication techniques to ensure the success of the program and positive work environment.- Perform other duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS- Must be able to fulfill the essential requirements of the Outdoor Science Camp Counselor position- Must be at least 18 years old.- Ability to work a varying work schedule including weekdays and weekends- Ability to work independently, while adhering to a fast-paced daily schedule- Has or is willing to obtain certification in Red Cross (or another approved vendor) Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED within 30 days of employmentPREFERRED- Four-year degree in a field relating to education, STEAM subject, OR equivalent relevant work experience- Demonstrated experience working with children in an organized educational or recreational setting- BilingualPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title.
